Fret End Dressing File

About This Item

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Fret End Tamer

This little file is great for taking the burr off of fret ends after beveling. It makes clean rounded ends. I like to put a layer of making tape down to ensure the fretboard isn't scratched, but the smooth sides of the file go a long way towards preventing any scratches.

Bought this for my workbench and it’s perfect, smooths rough fret ends off with ease. The round smooth edge works perfect for sliding across fretboard wood and leaving zero damage while taking them frets down a bit. 10/10 would buy another when this one dulls

FANTASTIC FRETS !!!!

After multiple nicks to a fretboard that took hours to repair I bought this file hoping it would be faster, easier, and more importantly with less chance of damaging a fretboard as promised on the stewmac website than using the set of “mini files” I’d bought awhile back for less than half the price of this file...folks...do yourselves a favor...order this fret file from stewmac today !!! This fret file makes short work of sharp frets...I suppose you could nick a fingerboard with this file but you’d have to work pretty hard at it....use this file and you’ll turn your fret work from also ran to “oh wow man“ THANKS STEWMAC !!!

Very handy file to have if you want to alter the ends of frets that stick out a tad too much or if you need to remove slight burr's on said frets.

Review from Tokyo The guitar fret was replaced with Jescar stainless steel. It was my first challenge. We gathered necessary tools by learning through YouTube channels in advance. I heard that Jessker's frets were very hard, but the stewmac tools did a great job. A fret cutter and fret file are essential tools. I am happy with the success. Thank you stewmac!

I had some fret ends that were sticking out due to the wood shrinking because of the winter dryness and this tool did the trick in no time. I was a little afraid to damage the guitar but it was so easy with the right tool.
