Fret End Dressing File

About This Item

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

I bought this file because the fret ends on my guitar were sticking out and were uncomfortable when playing. I bought this guitar 15 yrs ago and it needed some attention. This is a quality tool and is well designed, I cleaned up the fret ends in no time without messing up the fret board. Stew Mac has quality stuff.

I had heard about StewMac before from some of my more seasoned guitar buddys. I had some frets that had started sprouting, I believe is the correct term. I went to the SM site, and low and behold, look at all the tools to fine tune your instrument!!!! It is not just a company that deals with guitars, they have any and all the tools you need for EVERYTHING!!!! Bottom line, great company, great service, and a marvelous assortment! I have to throw intuit the tutorials and video lessons on how to use the tools is in it self is worth doing business with them!! I won't hesitate to do business with them again!!

I purchased a neck that had the frets already installed, but there were sharp edges from trimming the fret wire and this file was the ticket to clean up the edges.

Fret End File

My first order from this vendor was great experience. After seeing a video on their site explaining how the file performed I was convinced that even a novice like me might have a chance at actually dressing the frets on my bass guitar. The file arrived on schedule and was exactly as described. Wish me luck.
