Fret End Dressing File

About This Item

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Exactly as advertised

I only need to touch up frets ends once in a blue moon (typically on someone else's instruments), so I've been skating along with a three-corner file for years. I happened to read the description of this file while placing another order and thought I'd give it a try, and it's exactly what it claims to be: great for fret ends. There's nothing wrong with a three-corner file for that sort of work, but this really is a purpose-built tool for the job, and it performs great.

I have been using one of these for years and bought this as a spare. Perfect for end dressing frets and also finishing off shaping bone nuts and saddles. A workshop must have!

Nice File

My 2018 Gibson SG Special had sharp fret ends like you don't see on any other guitar worth more than 100 dollars. Filing fret ends? Ain't nobody at Gibson got time for that.

This did the trick. Next time I build my own guitar because I have zero experience and that is enough to better the Gibson factory workers.

This is my second file from stewmac and I love them both.

Even I could do it!

Excellent tool design. I had never dressed fret ends and was worried about possible damage to the finger board. I did make one small nick learning but was able to polish it out. The rest of the job went without a hitch I love finding an inexpensive "sleeper" guitar that I can fix up for a young musician. This tools will help me make them even better. Tks!

Really Great Fret File

This little file is a real gem when it comes to fixing fret sprout and those inevitable sharp little edges when crowning and dressing frets. The smooth rounded edge helps you to work without damaging the fret board or the finish on the neck.
