Dragon Hand-cut Rasp

About This Item

Fast working, super-smooth cut.
Unequaled for neck shaping and contouring.

Dragon handcrafted steel rasps have become our first choice for quickly shaping instrument necks, solidbody guitar contours, custom jigs and clamping cauls.

Double-cut rasp has two different radii for quickly shaping a neck heel or the base of a peghead.

Dragon rasp teeth are individually hand-struck on both sides of each file, leaving a slightly random pattern that a machine-made rasp simply can't equal. This reduces chattering and "wandering," giving a smooth but aggressive cut.

Dragon rasps have the right shapes for contouring a variety of neck sizes.

Use the coarse rasp to quickly shape:
• Solidbody contours
• Necks and bridges
• Jigs and cauls

Follow with the fine rasp for:
• Final shaping
• Smoothing
• Softening corners

Large 10" long x 1-5/8" wide   (254mm x 41.28mm)
Small 6" long x 1-3/16" wide (152mm x 30.16mm)
Double-radius 7" long x 7/8" wide (178mm x 22.22mm)

Another great tool

Like most StewMac tools, these give great results and are accessible for hobby builders. After repeatedly destroying cheap rasps, I bought a small fine and small coarse for shaping necks and general contouring. They’re very controllable, give excellent results requiring little clean up, and appear to last well. The sharp tips are great for tight corners, and it’s a joy to skip straight from shaping to sanding without having to work tooth marks out first.

Decent alternative to Auriou or Liogier rasps. Quality is not the same but at half to one third the price they're pretty good

Must have for neck carving!

I love shaping necks, even more now that I have this. This cuts fast, but still leaves a nice clean surface to follow with scrapers or sandpaper. My previous hardware store rasp seemed to cut more than shave, this shaves fast and clean.

I was like "50 friggin what?" but I looked at reviews of dozens and dozens of files from many vendors, and these reviews were always the best, so I bit the bullet. Wow, it is like butter through hardwoods, and super versatile. For body contours, neck shaping, etc., this thing is GREAT. I do not regret the price.

These babies cut! I needed to lighten up from my usual rasp technique and just love the level of control. Thanks

Surprising performance

I was skeptical at first, but after borrowing a friend's Dragon Rasp, I was sold. It shapes a mahogany and bloodwood laminated neck like it's a single piece of wood. You can lean into it to hog out material or use it lightly to cleanly shape. You can use the broad end to smooth large areas and the small point to get tight curves on a volute. It is absolutely worth getting both the coarse and fine rasps. The coarse rasp quickly shapes and removes material, while the fine rasp smooths the final shape quickly and cleanly.

One of my favorite tools!

Shaping the neck is my favorite part of the neck build, (radius sanding being my least fave), and the biggest reason for that is the dragon rasp! Man it cuts like butter through curly maple and is very controllable too. I use the large coarse for most of my shaping and it is capable of very fine corrections. The long tapered shape allows you to use the very tip for small areas or the wide end for removing a lot of wood quickly. Flat on one side and curved on the other gives it even more flexability.
