Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great Tool

By

The tool saved me at least an hour of hard labor.
The tool was easy to use and removed the edges of the frets after leveling the frets.
This is the 6th tool that I have tried and this tool made the job easy.

Not impressed with this file

The issue I find with these files is that the profile radius is too large or flat which results in too much material being removed from the top of the frets before removing enough off the sides. I would suggest re-designing these files with a smaller radius which corresponds more with the profile of the fretwire. They also have a tendency to chatter which would be greatly reduced if it had a finer cut.

My second set - go-to fret files!

I bought my first fret file from Stewart Macdonald years ago, and finally wore it out.
Hard to believe, but it finally got dull and will not take off much if any metal anymore.

So I bought the double set this time. Covers more fret sizes.

Overall, they are generally my go-to fret files. I also have the triangle unit, and a quarter round unit, which works great, but for just crowning and getting off that little bit of flat where you just leveled with a radius block, these are the ticket.

In my humble opinion, fixing many guitars a month, these are a must have for any instrument repair person, making repairs on any neck, no matter what the stringed instrument.

Quality tool, worked great.

This was my first attempt at a level and recrown, so I was a bit nervous. The patient, an '08 Highway 1 Strat, had been abused by too many cowboy chords and had severe wear at the 3rd and 4th fret under the 2nd & 3rd strings (B & G), so that any bend would fret out on the 5th fret. After leveling the frets, I took file in hand. It's not so coarse that you can over-file easily, but coarse enough that it doesn't take all day. A little trial-and-error (level, profile, repeat), and it looked good. After replacing the strings, success! It plays smoothly with no fretting out. I highly recommend this tool!

I highly recommend buying the set which allows you to file any size fret that you may have, and not damage the fret board. Must have tools for home or shop.

I might try the new Z model, but not if it’s twice the price. A nice tool.

Great time saver

I am reconditioning a 1980 Gibson SG Firebrand deluxe that had frets so worn I was hesitant to try to level and crown. I didn't want to change the feel so I leveled to see what I would have left to work with and finishing the work with these files was quick and easy. I bought both files because I needed jumbo for this and I need the medium on most of the Fender style guitars that I have. I am not a professional or expert by any means but this cut the time in half for me.

Excellent file!

I'm brand new to fretwork and was lucky enough to have to cut my teeth on one of my USA Jackson Soloists. (sarcasm)

I fought with other files to try and recrown a few frets, but it just wasn't working out. I really did not want to shell out the money for a single file, but it was worth every penny!

It took very little time and effort to get perfect results without leaving any deep scratches in the frets like other files did. I didn't need to go through several grits of sandpaper to finish up. Just hit them with 2000 grit followed by 0000 steel wool, and finally polishing compound... Perfect!
