Concave Fret End Files

About This Item

Extra-versatile files for fret end shaping.

These unique tools are for use after the frets have been installed, trimmed flush to the sides, and beveled with a flat file. They go a step beyond our popular Fret End Dressing File, adding a single-cut toothed concave filing surface. This makes smoothing the fret ends and delicately blending them into the crown of the fret more efficient. A professional touch, and a great fix for fret ends that protrude in dry weather, too.

Efficient design: Each file has a slim shape and 30-degree angled end, for good control and ease of use. The right tool for the job.

Concave surface: Single-cut teeth help blend the fret ends into the fret crown.

Safe surface: Opposite the concave edge is a flat, untoothed surface to protect the fretboard when you're filing with the side surfaces.

Toothed sides: The single-cut teeth on the sides file away metal burrs and help smooth the bevel on the fret ends.

Safe corners: Each file also has smooth untoothed corners to help prevent damage to the fingerboard and the upper edges of bound necks.

Available in two sizes, for medium and wide frets:
Medium: .080" (2mm)
Wide: .120" (3mm)

Each of these sturdy steel files is 7-7/8" long (similar files from other suppliers are only 3"), a practical length for filing fret ends without jamming the handle against the edge of the fretboard. Cutting surface length is 2-3/4". The file tang is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great tools for the Guitar player/Luthier who works on his/her own instruments.

I bought these great Concave Fret End Files from Stew Mac because I desperately needed a fret file that would do the job correctly and not damage the fretboard of my guitars.
These files were just the answer that I had been looking for. I recently had purchased a very nice Classical guitar from a well known Classical guitar Company, for some unknown reason it came from the factory without a proper fret job. The fret ends were very sharp and could very easily slice a finger open if you were not careful. I had a couple of fret files in my guitar tool kit but they were not concave files like the ones from Stew Mac and could easily damage the guitar fretboard trying to round the fret edges.
The Stew Mac files worked perfectly! I was able to take down the sharp fret edges with no damage to my guitar what so ever. My Classical guitar is no longer a danger but a pleasure to play. Great job Stew Mac!
Next I will use these great files on my prized 335 who is getting up there in years and her fret edges could use a little TLC now.
If you are a guitar player like me who prefers to do his own work on the instruments he loves and is qualified to do so look no further than Stew Mac for the right tools to get just about any guitar repair job done. Thanks again Stew Mac!

I am just getting into fretting my own guitar necks. After doing some homework, I chose this file to get me into the fretting game. I was pleased with how much of the job I could do with this one instrument - end round over, cleaning the flash from end bevel filing, and much more. This file is well thought out and well made.

The perfect file for getting rid of those little nibs on the ends of your fretboard. You know what I'm talking about the ends of the frets that cut up your hands.

Amazing fret filing tool

I recently purchased the new Fender Deluxe Strat and everything about the guitar is amazing except I could really feel the fret ends. This file cleaned the ends so the neck now is smooth to play and matches the feel and quality of this amazing guitar

Pretty good but...

I am no professional, but I feel the teeth on the sides of the file come too close to the smooth section that rides on the fretboard. I still have to tape to avoid digging up the fretboard or binding as I have to rotate the file somewhat to get the profile I want. But I am still getting used to it. Perhaps I'll develop a gentler touch or different technique.
