3-Corner Fret Dressing Files

About This Item

Specially made for traditional fret crowning and shaping.

Smooth corners protect the fretboard.
These special files are for those who prefer a traditional method of fret crowning. Their smooth corners won't leave scratches in the fretboard, and they're great for shaping the ends of the frets.

The small fine-cut file has 3" x 1/8" tapered cutting surfaces, and the medium-cut file has 5" x 1/4" tapered surfaces. The large file is known as a cant saw file, and is a favorite of our fret expert Dan Erlewine and many other well-known luthiers. It has a versatile flattened-triangle shape, with a 4-5/8" x 1/2" and two 4-5/8" x 5/16" cutting surfaces. All files have comfortable rubber-coated handles.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Decent File, but...

I purchased the 8" version of this file. It works OK for forming the frets. If you have the money I'd spend it on the Z-file that forms both sides of the fret at the same time and at different angles. Along with the fret end dressing file. That is about all you need to maintain your own instruments.

3-Corner Fret Dressing File

A very well-made tool! If you're like me, and your hand skills are not the greatest, I would suggest that you either mask the fretboard on both sides of the fret, or use the StewMac fingerboard guards (I've not tried these). Although each corner of the file is nicely smoothed, the edge of the file teeth can still score the fretboard as you tip/rotate it to crown the frets.

Decent File

I got the medium to practice with. I have been using the double edge files and wanted to try these out.
They are VERY aggressive so you have to be careful not to slip over the top. It must take alot of practice because Im getting bad chatter marks.
Good file to have tho.

Medium size

Just crowned the frets on my Tele with the medium size file and the file is so smooth it almost makes the process intuitive. This makes for some very relaxing work.

This is a great tool especially for refining your crowning work. I use the large 9 inch 3 corner file to rough my crowns in and then finish with the 8 inch medium. It it has a finer cut than the 9 inch and really give you great control on the finishing side of your crowning process. It's very precise. Love it.

Good Quality

I bought the small and medium files to crown frets. I use the medium size the mostly. The small one does come in handy at times. I was a little disappointed that the edges of the triangles were not as smooth as advertised. I had to use a flat file to take the bite off of the edges.

The medium size is all you'll ever need!

After getting the frets flat with a course leveler, use this to crown your frets. Then polish with a few higher grades of sand paper and you're done. You won't need a fancy crowning file!
