Depth-stop Drill Bits

About This Item

Stop breaking off small screws! When that little tuner mounting screw breaks off, you'll wish you'd used the right size drill bit!

Here's a versatile 7-piece mini bit set for avoiding catastrophes when you're installing tuners, pickguards, string trees, truss rod covers, pickup rings, and more. The closely spaced sizes let you choose exactly the right bit, a must for installing diabolically small screws in hardwoods such as maple, ebony and rosewood. As a bonus, each bit is color-coded with a handy movable plastic depth stop (you don't want to accidentally drill completely through your peghead, do you?)

SAVE when you order the complete set of 7

Here's a tip from our R&D luthiers:
If a depth stop sleeve loosens over time, remove it and put a little #10 thin super glue inside. Turn the sleeve to coat the inside evenly and tighten the inside diameter. Not too much glue—don't clog the sleeve. Apply a little paste wax to the bit and push it through the sleeve. You can spray a dash of super glue accelerator for a faster glue cure. The depth stop will fit like new again!

Prefect depth control.

If you are taping bits like I was, STOP! The plastic guides work great. Even when used directly against the wood, I didn't have any damage of any kind. Worked great with the jig for tuner holes.

Great item but would be nice to be labeled.

These are great drill bits and a great idea to have a stop in place. My only complaint or recommendation would be to label them. While they are all different colors, once you open the package they are just very similar bits with different color barrels. There is no way of telling what size they are. Printing the size on the color barrel would be helpful. Otherwise 5 stars

The plastic stop came off of it's original location before getting the drill ready for use. No big deal you can easily move it back by laying your screw next to the bit to see how deep you wanna set it. It's not like it has to be exact. That being said though, the fact that it is not secured to the bit makes it no different than any other bit.

Response from StewMac

Hi Dustin,
Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us.

If a depth stop sleeve loosens over time, we recomend removing it and putting a little #10 thin super glue inside. Then, rotate the sleeve to coat the inside evenly and tighten the inside diameter. Be carefule not to use too much glue, as this will cause the sleeve to clog. You can apply a little paste wax to the bit and push it through the sleeve. Spray a dash of super glue accelerator for a faster glue cure. The depth stop will fit like new again!

If you are not satisfied, you may return the Depth-stop Drill Bit for a refund or exchange. Please call us at 1-800-848-2273. We look forward to helping you with this.

Great For Gotoh

Absolutely worth it

This works so much better than tape. The bits are quality steel and very sharp. Clearly some folks can’t read instructions... If the stop slips up the bit, simply make certain that the stop is against the chuck and you will have perfectly consistent depths. Perfect sizes for installing tuners and pick guards!

Very nice!

Perfect match using StewMac's advice. One suggestion, though, chuck the bit up so that the stop rests against the jaws of the chuck. It will slip otherwise. These are small bits, so you can easily set the depth into the chuck on most drills. No more broken tuner screws!!! Great!

Unusable

First use the plastic stop sleeve began to slip so hole was too deep. Useless.

The #50 is a much used bit, especially for Fender style guitars (11 made thus far). I recently bought a second one (to have just in case), though the first one keeps on ticking.

Ok but the depth stop is a bit too wide

A decent drill bit. 2 requests; 1) stamp the size on the plastic depth stop and 2) decrease the diameter of the depth stop. The depth stop was a bit too wide to get a nice 90deg hole drilled.
