Fret Slot Cleaning Tool

About This Item

Take it from Dan Erlewine, "A fret won't seat well if its slot isn't clean!" We developed this tool to effectively scrape away wood chips and old glue, for better fret seating.

The Fret Slot Cleaning Tool comes with 2 chisel blades. Additional replacement blades are sold separately.

This 5-1/2" Fret Slot Cleaning Tool has a comfortable handle with a metal collet, and a replaceable hooked .019" thin square-edged chisel that gets into the corners of the slots on bound fretboards. It can be used to scrape the bottom and the wall of the fret slot, and when the tool is held with both hands for control, it pries up dried glue.

The Fret Slot Cleaning Tool is included in this money-saving set:

Yuck! Cleaning fret slot gunk from the Mike Bloomfield Tele

There was a load of glue and grunge under these frets. With scrapers, wipers and heat from an alcohol lamp, it’s amazing how much gunk Dan Erlewine extracted from Mike Bloomfield’s old fretboard!

Nice tool.

Sharp and effective. Works well and I feel much more control than a little mini saw I use with a blade cut short (aka Dan E from the Stew Mac guitar repair book).

Great tool which does what it's intended for perfectly. Very good price and helps a lot with cleaning fret slots before installation. 5 stars as it does exactly as it should

Should have bought one earlier

This tool has been a lifesaver on my most recent fretboard. After binding and radiusing, it is imperative to remove all the glue and sawdust from the slots to get a proper fret seat. Razor blades and X-Acto knives work, but this makes short work of it. I agree with taking it slow. Trying to remove too much at once could chip the board. The blade fits a large X-Acto handle, so just buy the blade if you have one of those lying around.

This tool works perfectly for cleaning glue out of my fret slots after flying fingerboards down.

Does the job

This blade does the job and fits a standard large Xacto tool handle--of which I already had several--saving the additional cost of the Stew-Mac handle. I am not sure the blade is worth so much more than the Xacto curved carving blade (on which it seems to be based), but the tip is slightly different and allows it to act a little more like a "chisel" on the bottom of the fret slot. The material appears to be tougher than the steel used in the Xacto blades.

Crazy

I only purchased the replacement blade, as I'm on a budget and it was much cheaper than the whole tool. It worked fine without the handle. I was amazed at the perfect fit in the slots. Very sharp, and removed more gunk than I thought possible. Highly recommended step in build process.

Awesome Tool!

I use this thing ALL the time in the repair shop in Nashville, TN and at my home shop, String Theory Guitar Repair, in Mount Juliet, TN. If you're using some other tool to clean out your fret jobs you're making a huge mistake. This thing does it quickly and cleanly. It's sturdy enough to scrape out residual super glue from previous fret jobs. It's a major factor in my picture perfect fret jobs! Get one! Get it NOW!

If you are doing refrets, or plan to - just get this one.
Or - better yet, just get the "Refret Saw and Fret Slot Cleaning Tool Set". I use both tools when doing refrets.
