Luthier's Digital Caliper

About This Item

Our Luthier's Digital Caliper combines precision, ease of use, and versatility all at an attractive price. But what makes it really special is how easy it makes fret work.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches, millimeters, or fractions
  • A must for all precision guitar work

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more—this caliper has long-life stainless steel jaws. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches, millimeters or fractions, it measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate .0005" (.01mm) resolution. The jaws can be locked at any position.

CR2032 battery and durable plastic storage case included.

The perfect caliper for luthiers

By

As usual, the tools proposed by Stewart are the result of a reflection to facilitate the work of the luthier. Of a good quality of manufacture, the caliper has all the useful functions of which the conversion mm / inch. It's perfect, everything is there!

I love this caliper so much, I bought a second one to keep it handy. Easy measurement, good weight, very solid build.

The feature I like most about the Stew-Mac caliper is that it reads out in fractions, rather than decimals. Who uses 10ths of an inch anyway. Try to convert a decimal to 4/64ths! Yes, the Stew-Mac digital caliper is on the expensive side, but the special features on it that specifically satisfy the needs of a luthier are worth paying the price . . . besides, you'll have it for the rest of your life and you won't need to have a calculator and a formula with you to convert the decimals as you need to do with the cheaper ones. Also, the battery is the wafer-style which is available anywhere, rather than the button-style found on the cheaper ones and which I have to search high and low to find. This caliper, like all Stew-Mac tools are for the luthier who wants to ride in a Cadillac, rather than a Yugo.

I had been wanting these for a while. Was using Jive HF calipers. they were terrible and to measure 3 or 4 times to come close to accurate. these are a dream very accurate. super happy.

Stewmac Just Keeps Getting Better

I have the first set of calipers that I was gifted in the sixties when I first started learning luthery under Harmon Satterly at Satterly and Chapen Music in San Francisco. When I found a set of digital calipers at a hardware store in the early 2000's, I was so happy to have a modern measuring tool, but I still had charts on the wall for converting mm to inches and decimals to fractions. When Stewmac came out with the Lutier's Digital Caliper I bought one and enjoyed working with it. It was designed with the luthier in mind, but I use it when making jewelry and any other task that needs exact measurements. Thanks Stewmac for always providing us with the greatest innovations that make our job much easier. And thanks for having Dan Erlewine on your team.

Indispensable Tool, Amazing Customer Service.

This is an excellent and indispensable tool, but this is more a review of Stew-Mac's over-the-top and beyond-the-call-of-duty customer service than of the tool itself. I bought the old model digital caliper about ten years ago and used it A LOT, and it still works, but I stripped out the tiny screw heads on the battery compartment using the wrong screwdriver, and one day I couldn't change the battery (a local watch repairman helped me out). I wrote to Stew Mac and asked if they could replace the screws, and --- they sent me a new caliper. (Wow...!) Got my attention. I am accustomed to doing my own set-up work, and I buy miscellaneous guitar parts and small tools, and Stew Mac has a lot of wonderful toys. It's clear they care about their customers, I was so surprised to find that they treated me like a five-star customer - thanks, Stew Mac.

Just a quick thank-you to the wonderful people at StewMac. They responded quickly to my previous one-star review, and I called a few days ago per their response. They promptly sent out a replacement, and now all is good. The replacement came in via FedEx today, and I'm back in business. Thank you StewMac!
