Tuner Bushing Press

About This Item

Don't use a hammer!
Use this press for damage-free bushing installation and removal.

A fine instrument deserves care—our Tuner Bushing Press is the right tool for installing press-fit tuner bushings. Its steady controlled pressure helps protect the peghead finish, for a clean, professional looking job. It removes the bushings too, even stubborn bushings in counterbored pegholes.

    Improved!
  • See-through protective sleeve for bushing removal (no working blindly)
  • Clear protective peghead caul works with multiple bushing sizes

This convenient handheld tool was developed by Todd Sams here in our shop, and works with most major brands of guitar and mandolin tuning machines.

Best of all, it removes the bushings too!
Even stubborn bushings in counterbored pegholes can be removed easily and without damage, thanks to an adjustable expanding pin that grips the bushing from the inside.

Protects against serious peghead damage
As tight-fitting bushings come out of the peghead face, they often cause chips of dry wood and lacquer to pop up around the peghole. This is a well-known problem, and our Bushing Press protects against it in two ways:
1. Bushings are eased out gradually, without hammering.
2. We provide a clear protective caul that surrounds the bushing on the peghead face, holding the finish down as the bushing slides out.

Included with the Tuner Bushing Press:
  • Brass pins for installing and removing bushings
  • Caul for protecting the peghead face
  • Allen wrench

Works but could be better

Have to be careful with these and it can ruin your tuner holes quickly because of the tool's press rod and base will move on you. Picture to me kinda shows everything in a fixed position. Tool does work to press in the bushing but take your time.

Could Be Better

I used this tool to install NOS vintage tuner bushings into a 1978 Les Paul, and after some learning curve they went in fine. But removal will be a problem. The acrylic caul and clear sleeve that fit over the top of the bushing are too small to accommodate many bushings including all of my electrics (I checked). The transparent sleeve is about 0.050" dia. and the caul is about 0.48" dia.

So check the diameter of the "top flange" of your bushings if you plan to use this tool for removal. Hopefully Stewmac will come out with an updated set of optional attachments to work with bushings that have flange diameters greater than 0.48".

For now, I'm back to making my own removal press, or pounding them out... where is that hammer...

Great except it could be better

I used this tool on a tuner upgrade to an es-335. Removing the existing bushings was easy once I got the "bite" correctly adjusted. The installation of new bushings was another thing altogether. The backside plate does not easily center on the headstock. This caused the bushing in two conditions to start deflecting to one side and go in crooked. The plate could benefit from a removable (screw-in) centering pin. When the pin is no in place perhaps a mon-marring screw in plate could be installed on the face of the plate.

Excellent Specialty Tool

Recently I needed to pull the Waverly bushings in order to refinish the peghead face on an expensive guitar. The bushing holes were counterbored so there was no way to push them out. After setting up this press with the included expansion pin which grips the inside of the bushing, the bushings were easily removed with no damage to the finish. I'm refinishing the face of the peghead anyway, but it was nice to know that this tool removed bushings without damaging finish. Once again, a Stew Mac tool was just what I needed for a quick and expert result to what would have otherwise been a difficult task.

Beyond Easy To Use If...

When I first went to use this it was a little wobbly and hard to control until I stopped trying to keep the squeeze part of the handle parallel with the head stock. The squeeze part of the handle is irrelevant. It may be parallel; it may not be. What matters is the straight light between the base of the press (little white plastic piece on the bottom jaw) and the press guide. If you focus on having those two points in a straight line perpendicular to the headstock you can knock a set out in under a minute... well 2 minutes.

Something I should have thought of

Well done. Nice tool, may be a little fiddly for those with 7 thumbs and 3 pinkies. But those of us old enough to have rebuilt a Triumph 650 cylinder head can recognise it straight away! Now to get those valves in....

great for elliminating damage

I bought this item to cut out damages on a beautifully finished head stock. When you spend time finishing the head stock to a gleam you definitely don't want to ruin it by using the wrong tool for the job of installing bushings. I would recommend the bushing press to maintain a beautiful guitar neck.
