Fret/Fingerboard Levelers

About This Item

Precision-ground for flatness.
Fast, accurate leveling tools for the pro shop.

Each heavyweight rectangular 1" x 2" steel tube is precision-ground for flatness on the narrow sides. Attach 3M Stikit Gold Abrasives to quickly level frets or level an unfretted fingerboard. The tool's edges are smooth to prevent gouging.

Available in three lengths for any job you have:

8" Fret/Fingerboard Leveler
The shorter 8" length is ideal for spot leveling and creating fall away or compound radii on guitars, and this size is just right for mandolins and ukuleles. With so many uses in the shop, if you only get one Leveler—this is it!

16" Fret/Fingerboard Leveler
The 16" length is best for work on installed guitar and bass necks. You'll level most of the frets at the same time, giving you faster and more accurate results. And you won't need to worry about hitting the nut, saddle, or hardware.

24" Fret/Fingerboard Leveler
The 24" length quickly levels frets and fingerboards on new builds and uninstalled necks. With the extra-long size you'll level all of the frets at the same time, giving you faster and more accurate results.

Roger Sadowsky, ace builder and repairman, wrote us to say:
"I have been leveling fingerboards and frets for 30 years and thought I was pretty set in my ways. However, I have recently tried the 16" steel levelers (#4578) and man, talk about teaching an old dog new tricks! My fingerboards have never been better, and they work much better than files for leveling frets. Thank you again, StewMac!!!"

Save with the set: Leveler and Stikit Set
Stikit Abrasives cut like a file, last longer than regular sandpaper, and are sized to stick right to the 1" width of our Levelers. These are the same professional sandpapers we use to quickly and cleanly level fingerboards and frets, and to remove the scratches before you recrown and polish.

Each set includes one Leveler and four 15-yard rolls of Stikit, one of each grit: 320, 400, 600 and 800-grits. More grits are available separately too.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Trust is Everything

It's great to have a precision straight edge that I trust. I bought from StewMac because I trust their quality, but I've confirmed both its straightness and other straight-edged tools with this (both must be straight to allow no light through their edges when kissing) and used Stikit sandpaper (and Dura-Gold, which is cheaper and easier to get fine grits online) to straighten other cheaper tools. I bought this for fret leveling, but it has turned out to be be even more useful. I got the 16" one, which is a good size for fret leveling, but wish I had the 24" one for straightening other long tools (e.g., a cheap straight edge, a level, a cheap notched straight edge, etc.). The heavy weight is also way better than aluminum for precision work (e.g., no need to apply your own uneven pressure when sanding frets). Bam!

Heavy Metal

This is one substantial tool. As others have noted, you pretty much just let the weight of the tool do the work for you. I put my notched straight edge on the ground sides, and unless both tools happen to perfectly matching imperfections, it's dead straight. Excellent tool - just don't drop it on your toe.

Works as advertised!

Worn frets on my strat were causing my G string, in particular, to buzz - long story short no more buzz until action is so low all strings begin to buzz. I used the adhesive sand paper on the fret/fingerboard leveler and original z-file to dress the frets also purchased at StewMac. I do not know how I could have ensured such uniformly level frets without this tool.

Just Perfect

You certainly get what you paid for here. This beam is for serious heavy-duty. Will most definitely do a great job, and last forever. StewMac tools are always top quality, and this one has a finished look that shows nothing but.

The wieght and length make this worth it

By

The weight and length puts pressure on the high spots finding high spots where you can't see. Especially if there is a whole section on one end of the neck that is not lined up with the other side.

The frets above the 12th fret can sometimes be level but they are off from the frets around the nut, you will never figure that out with a short light weight file.

The length helps find those trouble spots.

I wish I had this 20 years ago when I first attempted getting rid of high frets on my first cheap guitars.

Save yourself some trouble

8" Fret Leveler

By

Didn't realize that the beveled edges on both ends shortens the sanding area by 1/2 ". Other than that, the leveler was easy to use and very effective.

Great fret leveing tool

By

Couldn't be happier with this. It is milled perfectly, nice rounded edges, the weight makes it stable without needing downward pressure. I made a little wood jig to hold the neck flat, and I am glad I bought the 24" beam to cover all the frets. It really nice!

Heavy duty

By

this thing is heavy! It gonna last forever. Although I prefer radius sanding block for working on my neck, this tool have his place in my setup, for a lot of task that require something REALLY flat, for luthier job or building tool, sanding jobs, building jig or anything else...
