3M Scotch-Brite Pads

About This Item

Long lasting, and more durable than steel wool
Use 3M Scotch-Brite Pads for cleaning and deburring metal parts or scuff-sanding a finish. Great for waterbased finishes. Will never rust.

For cleaning, polishing, and refinishing
Reusable Scotch-Briteā„¢ pads have many uses in the shop. They're durable, washable, and won't shed the way steel wool does. This means no surprise rust specks in a waterbased finish, and no pesky metal particles that stick to your pickup magnets.

We picked the 3 pads we use the most in our shop:

    #7447 General Purpose Pad, maroon
  • Ideal for scuff-sanding between finish coats and removing polyester finishes with a chemical stripper
  • Similar to grade 1 steel wool
  • 360-400 grit aluminum oxide abrasive
    #7448 Ultra Fine Pad, gray
  • The last step to a flawless finish
  • Useful for de-glossing a sticky neck
  • Similar to grade 00 steel wool
  • 2000-2500-grit silicon carbide abrasive
    #7445 Light Duty Pad, white
  • Lasts longer than steel wool and doesn't shed
  • Cleans and polishes hardware and frets
  • Similar to grade 0000 steel wool
  • Super-fine 2500-grit aluminum silicate abrasive

Each reusable pad is 6" x 9" x 0.250" (152mm x 229mm x 6mm).

De-Glossing

By

I have three "V" neck Strats with necks that have glossed over way more than I care for. The description for the #7448 noted "useful for de-glossing a sticky neck" so I thought I would give it a try. With very gentle pressure it did exactly as I was hoping. I took it very slowly and made a few passes so that I did not take off too much finish. Very pleased.

This is fantastic!

It will be a substitute for steel wool # 0000!
Unlike steel wool it is very good so it will not shave off scraps!
Moreover, it can wash and has a long life!

Just used these

Really hate steel wool on my bench. These seem to work pretty good. I only filed and re-crowned two frets, so I didn't go for a super polish in order to not embarrass the other frets. Used the middle one and super fine one to clean up some fret board scratches. Worked good. When I ordered these I didn't notice the size. They are huge!! I cut out a 2 1/2 inch square from each. Worked great, this is like a two year supply. Buy them just to have another abrasive option, this stuff is cheap for what it does.

I think a bit over priced, however, worked OK.

Great explanation

This is the only place I have found that explains the difference between the different colour pads.
Love the way Stewmac gives detailed description of everything so the online buyer feels like they are almost in the shop.

They are exactly as advertised. For some projects, only a great scratch pad will do and these are great!
