StewMac Safe Slot Nut Guard

About This Item

Stop your file before the slot’s too deep!

Cutting string slots is delicate: if you cut one slot a little too low, you've blown the nut and have to start over. StewMac's own Don MacRostie devised the Safe Slot™ to make accurate nut slotting fast and fumble-free. He shows us how it's done in the video!

A trick the pros use:
Stack feeler gauges against the nut to set your slot depth. When the slotting saw touches the feeler gauges, you've hit your depth. The Safe Slot Nut Guard holds the feeler gauges tightly against the nut, and curved to the radius of your fingerboard. This leaves both hands free for filing. You're able to work faster without worrying about cutting too deep.

  • Holds multiple feeler gauges
  • Pulls gauges tight to match fretboard radius
  • Locks in place against the nut. No slipping!

Perfect string spacing without math
For good playing feel, don't use equal spaces between the strings. Wound strings are thicker, so they need more space than thinner treble strings. In fact, every string space needs to be a little different to feel right in the player's hand.

This set includes tapered wedges for both electric and acoustic guitars to mark out your trim line and a slim version of our String Spacing Rule to show where to put your string slots. Slide it into the Safe Slot, same as a feeler gauge, and see exactly where each string belongs. No measuring, dividing or calculating. Replace the rule with your feeler gauges and you're ready to cut nut slots. Thanks to luthier Ron Baran for the idea of adding this slim spacing rule to the set.

The Safe Slot's felt-padded caul adapts to most neck shapes, and any fingerboard width up to 2-1/16".

Stewmac still have not made a version that will work on necks that have a Martin Diamond volutes or Gibsons with volutes. Come on Stew]Mac peeps there are millions of guitars out there and thousand more built yearly with neck volutes that will need nut work done on them

Response from StewMac

Thank you for your honest feedback. We are sorry the StewMac Safe Slot does not work for some of the instruments you do nut repairs on. Your comments will be forwarded to our Product Development team for consideration.

Guard your nuts!

This works nicely, I’m glad I bought this. It’s awfully pricey until you use it and realize how indispensable of a tool the nut guard is. I bought this to convert a les Paul es and Jazzmaster for left handed playing.. takes a bit of thinking and planing to get the concept but once you’ve got it it’s straight forward. I do wish for some inbetween sizes for the feeler guages; however, everything worked out fine. I watched a few StewMac vids on how to do nuts and between the few videos worked out my plans.. just do your prep work and measuring. take you time and have fun! Couldn’t exactly figure out the string spacing ruler but I didn’t need it anyway for this particular job. I’m sure it works fine! As a reminder, you will still need some nut files I shaped the bits with some 220 sandpaper and some fibers stuff with no issues, I used Tusq nuts.

Safe Slot Nut Guard

Don't do much "from scratch" nut installations usually relying on pre-slotted installations. However thought I should have this on hand "just-in-case". Did notice the felt pad seems ill-fitted (not centred and crooked). Should work OK, if not I'll just cut it off & re-install it properly. Simply poor quality control. Also the printed material supplied with the kit leaves a lot to be desired (very sketchy). I assume your full video would be a recommended purchase.

Works great, instructions included leave a bit to be desired, but the online video compensates for this.

Great time saver!

It removes the guess work for spacing, shape, and depth. My first job was replacing a nut on a 70s Cortez Les Paul copy. I bought an Epiphone replacement nut, which is a 12" radius but the LP copy has a 9.5" radius. Instead of file, check on the guitar, file, check, file... I was able to get all the measurements and get ready for the final finishing work in about 30 minutes instead of a couple of hours.

This little tool allows me to get aggressive when making nut slots and eliminates the concern about cutting just a little bit too deep. It also eliminates the constant checking especially when getting close to the proper string/fret gap. A great time saver.
