StewMac Safe Slot Nut Guard

About This Item

Stop your file before the slot’s too deep!

Cutting string slots is delicate: if you cut one slot a little too low, you've blown the nut and have to start over. StewMac's own Don MacRostie devised the Safe Slot™ to make accurate nut slotting fast and fumble-free. He shows us how it's done in the video!

A trick the pros use:
Stack feeler gauges against the nut to set your slot depth. When the slotting saw touches the feeler gauges, you've hit your depth. The Safe Slot Nut Guard holds the feeler gauges tightly against the nut, and curved to the radius of your fingerboard. This leaves both hands free for filing. You're able to work faster without worrying about cutting too deep.

  • Holds multiple feeler gauges
  • Pulls gauges tight to match fretboard radius
  • Locks in place against the nut. No slipping!

Perfect string spacing without math
For good playing feel, don't use equal spaces between the strings. Wound strings are thicker, so they need more space than thinner treble strings. In fact, every string space needs to be a little different to feel right in the player's hand.

This set includes tapered wedges for both electric and acoustic guitars to mark out your trim line and a slim version of our String Spacing Rule to show where to put your string slots. Slide it into the Safe Slot, same as a feeler gauge, and see exactly where each string belongs. No measuring, dividing or calculating. Replace the rule with your feeler gauges and you're ready to cut nut slots. Thanks to luthier Ron Baran for the idea of adding this slim spacing rule to the set.

The Safe Slot's felt-padded caul adapts to most neck shapes, and any fingerboard width up to 2-1/16".

Learning curve

Gotta be honest. The videos make it seem easy, however my first few measurements were well above the recommended settings. It took me a little while to figure it out. But now I can't live without it and have no idea how I did so before.

Thanks for selling this

Looks good, but ...

The caul should be widened to accomodate 54mm. 2-1/16" is 52+mm. 54 would cover 95+% of classical and flamenco guitar builds. This one thing kept me from hitting the order button.

Excellent for fast accurate nut slotting.

Great tool. Heavily used here. I would recommend buying the 0673 string spacing rule along with this tool. Also, it is super nice to have a super sharp 4H or 5H pencil for really accurate marking when using the 0673 spacing rule. To achieve a super sharp hard pencil get a vintage Dietzgen 1099 Sharpoint sharpener. This makes the Safe Slot Nut Guard and Spacing rule a nice set indeed.

Seems ok but very loose, I will need to shim for my strat

Great idea, can be done without this for sure but I wanted to try it, it's very loose on my strats, almost like it won't thread far enough.

Another great tool from StewMac

I am a newcomer to guitar building and this toolset, along with the very detailed instructions, gave me the confidence to go ahead and try to make a nut for the guitar I'm building. The Nut Guard allowed me to scribe very accurate lines on the nut blank right where they need to be. Then with the correct set of feeler gauges in the Nut Guard, I filed the slots without hesitation. When the file contacts the feeler gauge, you're there. So, how did my first attempt at nut making go? It was a learning experience. The second one was much better. The third one is going to be the nut for my current Telecaster build. Three tries and I got it, because of the Safe Slot Nut Guard!

Stewmac Safe Slot Nut Guard Electric Wedge

After I received this Electric Guitar Wedge, I used it to help me safely obtain the right string heights at the nut for my own Strat when I worked on it recently. It made the job easier, and that's what I like.

Very Good But Needs Longer Adjustment Screw

By

Verified Buyer

I used this to make a nut from scratch for a '57 P-Bass. Overall, it is an excellent tool but like some other reviews have noted the adjustment screw was not long enough to properly tighten the caul. I will make a shim for it with a piece of an old StewMac bench pad--so simple fix. Other than that, it really simplifies nut making and I highly recommend it.
