Feeler Gauges

About This Item

A set of 11 steel gauges that allow precision filing of nut slot depths.

Simply stack the appropriate gauges on the fingerboard, against the front edge of the string nut, and file the nut slot down to the top of the stack.

These gauges are also useful for checking string-to-fret clearances and fret slot width, for hardware installation work, and for setting up shop tools.

Gauges include .016", .018", .020", .022", .024", .026", .028", .030", .032", .034" and .040" thicknesses.

Feeler Gauges: 6" x 1/2"
Mini Feeler Gauges: 3" x 1/2"

The Feeler Gauges are included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

I got these to help me in making and setting up nuts that I am learning to make.
They work great, though I find it beneficial to separate them when working with them
and that is easily enough done as is putting them back together.

I like the length of these gauges for working on guitars -- better than one's that I have for auto use.

I like that these are longer than normal which makes them easier to use than the standard spark plug feeler guages and can be used with the nut files and the nut jig.

If you don't have these then you should buy them. Essential tool, especially for cutting nut slots. These are great. I have a shorter set as well that is easier to deal with on a mandolin or smaller instrument.

Sorry I didn't buy them sooner

I received a guitar kit as a gift. It came with a plastic nut. When the guitar was done, I decided to remove the plastic nut and install a bone nut. I easily cut it to size, shaped it and glued it into place. I already owned a set of Stewart-MacDonald files so cutting the slots was relatively easy. However, determining the depth was nerve racking. Now that I own the feeler gauges, I can check my work and see if I can make the slots a little deeper to improve the string action. I would have experienced far less anxiety had I ordered these gauges when I bought the files. The best feature is that the "leafs" are long enough so that you can easily "stack" them for a more precise measurement. I'm sorry I didn't buy them sooner.
