StewMac Fingerboard Guards

About This Item

Better than your basic guards! Our improved design fits all fretwire sizes, anywhere on the neck. Protect your fretboard when filing or polishing a fret.

New slot sizes: set of 6 for guitar now includes 2 guards each to fit narrow, medium and wide frets. Set of 4 for bass includes 2 guards each for medium and wide frets. The extra length fits 5 and 6-string bass guitars.

New slim profile: guards now fit between ALL the frets on guitars, banjos, and basses—even the high frets. Fits most mandolins and ukulele spaces, too.

New notches: a nice touch for holding the guard in place with a rubber band, freeing both your hands for the job. Tip of the hat to Steve Olson of Elderly Instruments for this idea!

Clean professional fret work!
Each of these handy guards fits over a fret for safe filing and polishing, to help keep your fretboard clean and unscratched. They're made of flexible 0.010" stainless steel for durability and long life.

Well worth adding to my tool set

These guys saved me at least 30 minutes of taping the fretboard. Also, I didn’t have to stop for each fret to replace the tape after getting started with the filing. Wished I had them sooner.

Excellent item, been needing one of these for a long time

The fingerboard guards are the perfect idea for taking care of those frets that can get a bit gnarly over time. It is a quick and easy way to make a guitar or bass really shine if the lighting is right . . .

Good, but not perfect.

They do a great job. They're much faster and more secure than taping the fretboard. The only complaint I have is that I was expecting to set it and go, but the notch for the rubber band sliced the band so I have to hold the guard with my other hand. It's not a major problem, just a readjustment of expectations. Using the rubber band was a good idea, it just didn't work for me.

Thanks to the StewMac Fingerboard Guards I didn’t damage the fretboard of my Martin HD28 or Alvarez Yairi dreadnaught guitars

I bought this for my own use on my guitars.

Helpful but awkward.

Using the fingerboard guard with the provided rubber band attached as shown, the guard bends, arching above the fingerboard. If I move the rubber band inward to stop the arching, the rubber band gets in the way of filing. It’s a good idea, but I ended up masking the entire fingerboard with tape, which was more practical.

They are ok but tend to buckle slightly off the fretboard when installed. another words not dead flush with the board. when dressing frets i see this could be a problem.
Bottom line. Save your money & mask the fretboard with masking tape.

Speeds up fret polishing!

Before these I would maintain a dedicated wheel for the pedestal buffer to use on frets, and would tape off the entire fingerboard and take the entire neck/guitar to the pedestal. Now I chuck up a mini buffing wheel in my Foredom tool at my bench with buffing compound, lay down the fretboard guard over a fret, zip over it, and repeat for the rest of the frets. Now I'm done polishing frets to little mirrors before I'd even be done taping off the neck.

I still have the fret wheel for the pedestal buffer, for those jobs that I need to tape-off anyway for full recrowns, etc, but if I'm doing a polish without a recrown, this little baby is a time-saver.

I bought a used guitar that was well used. I bought these and the fret erasers and used them to clean up the guitar. Looks much cleaner now.
