StewMac Shop Rule

About This Item

6-inch precision steel rule for instrument work
The most-used ruler in every shop just got better! We added a center-finder, and vertical end scales to this durable, easy-to-read tool.

Satin chrome steel with sharp black etchings reads well even in poor light. Accepts pencil marks nicely, too.

The inch marks are in 16ths, 32nds and 64ths—for fast readings or extreme precision.

Centering rule
With zero at the center, this rule extends left and right to locate the center of a neck or bridge saddle.

Vertical end rules
On each end are small vertical rulers (1/32" increments). Useful for measuring saddles, nut and pickup heights.

Metric version
Same features as our inch ruler, with 0.5mm, 1mm, and 1cm increments.

Size: 6" x 3/4" (152mm x 19mm)

Can't be beat!

So many times I wished for a rule like this. Thank you StewMac for thinking of it!!!

Quality rule

I just do simple instrument maintenance and repairs at home, but a tape measure and a tiny machinist ruler just aren't enough. This shop rule lives up to the description. Love center finding feature. I should have bought this years ago.

Everything is great except the price.

I love this ruler...but are way over priced!

I lost my first metric ruler somewhere in my shop. Since prayers to St. Anthony didn't help this time ... I bought TWO. That's how good these are, although $21 for a six inch ruler is twice what it should be.

Excellent!

Quite expensive but very well made, in particular it is very very readable so you can take measurements or draw precise marks easily. I recommend it.

Love this rule for fretboard width measurements and for placing fret board dots.

Perfect for my application

I'm an engraver, not a luthier, but we both have some of the same measurement problems to solve. I also bought the metric rule, because I frequently need to measure to fractions of a millimeter. Findings centers is also easier with this rule.
Incidentally, I bought my Martin D-21 new in 1964 & still play it and the five other Martins I have bought over the years. StewMac has supplied me with other tools, more musically oriented.

Perfect for tuning machines

I have both the standard and now the metric. The metric is much easier to use when spacing for my tuning machine placements on headstocks.

I miss the old dual-sided Standard/Metric rule

These are very nice shop rules. But they used to be better.

StewMac used to sell a dual-sided metric/standard rule. That was useful. For that reason, StewMac was the only source I used to purchase the rules in use in our shop. Once the centering rule was debuted, though, they ceased that dual-system offering. This definitely irks me, and I feel it's disenfranchising for us professionals that work internationally and communicate in both systems; Now, if I'm to equip each technician with StewMac rules, I have to buy them two different ones. More expense, more clutter, and lower efficiency so that we can gain a few features that are literally useless 99% of the time.

I have no choice but to buy our shop rules elsewhere until the old format is offered again. Compared to that one, these new mono-system rules are bad investments for our organization.

If you're just buying one rule for your shop and you're bad enough at math that you need a centering rule, or want to expedite drafting procedures a bit, these are very good items. Don't get me wrong. But I find it's nowhere near as useful as the previous Standard/Metric version. When using the newer rules, I usually find myself grumbling and tossing 'em to the side in favor of the old one. I nearly never have this criticism, but this is one item where it feels like StewMac revamped their offering to target it precisely at the amateur market.

Better than what you’d find at a hardware store.

The thought that went into the layout is just what you need for guitar work. Much nicer than the one I had already. This is a great ruler and the center finder is ultra convenient. I recommend this.
