StewMac Luthier's Square

About This Item

Precision steel square for instrument work
Square up parts, lay out string spreads, and accurately set up tools. 1/32"-increments on one side, millimeters on the other.

Lies flush on guitar tops
Unlike squares with a thin blade and thick handle, our Luthier's Square works flat against a guitar's surface.

Set up tools, true up parts
The small size is handy for tight spots. The notched inside corner fits against corners snugly, with no wobble.

Measure nuts, saddles and pickups
Small vertical rulers are useful for measuring height on saddles, nuts, and pickups.

Easy to read
Satin chrome steel with sharp black etchings reads well even in poor light. Accepts pencil marks nicely, too.

  • 4" ruler (10cm)
  • 0.040" (1.02mm) thick satin chrome steel

Very Useful

A lovely machined tool with a lot of heft. Obviously very accurate. My only problem with these type of tools is that the corners are sharp as razors and can be a menace to wood and finishes. Obviously these measuring tools have to have sharp corners, but beware and be careful around tender wood or a new finish or you are going to make a nasty scratch.

Metric on back

I wish it had imperial measurements on the back instead of metric. I feel most people use one or the other, not both. Maybe they could sell two squares an imperial for the stubborn US and Metric for the rest of the world.

Great for setting router bit heights using the scale on the toe of the square.

The Magic Square!

Incomparable to transfer center lines from edges perfect to mark the easy brace notches on the easy outside curve and even "perfecter" on the tricky angled inside curve! Very good tool!

Great Little Square

I have about 5 squares, but they're all to big for some of the closer, tight work I need to do on a neck or body. This square is perfect for those tight places.

A sweet and useful tool

By

This is a sweet and useful tool. I used it to square up the blade on my table saw without knocking off the the little burr on the test board's edge after every trial cut. It has replaced my cute little 4" Starrett combination square as the most frequently use tool in my shop. I'd get another one, but I only have two hands and couldn't use both simultaneously! Maybe some good friend needs one as a gift . . .

This is a very handy square, the size and end graduations are just what I wanted. I would rather that it was all inches or all metric though. When I use it to measure and have to turn it left to right it leaves me with different scale, frustrating.

My favorite square. Thank you StewMac.

All of my other squares are the traditional rosewood handled and brass pinned ones for wood working. They are nice for case work, but too bulky for smaller stuff. That is where this square takes over. I squared up a mahogany neck blank with a No 8 jointer plane tonight and this square was just perfect for checking my progress. This is sure to become one of my most reached for tools.

We all need a good square right? The problem is that ordinary hardware store squares don't always work for special luthery needs. It's really nice to have a small, flat, low profile square. I like it. Thank you Stew Mac.
