Get it right the 1st time

Built a StewMac Dead Kit and followed the instructions for correct bridge placement. When I finish the guitar and started playing it I found the intonation to be off. I removed the bridge, plugged the bridge pin holes and re position the bridge. I wanted to make sure I had it right and the Saddlematic was spot on. Plays and sounds great now.

this little tool DOES get your scale length correct HOWEVER you really have to be careful to get the bridge square to the finger board. It is easy for something to get tilted a little bit and throw the centerline off. SO.. yes it does locate the saddle. just be mindful that you'll need to square things up too. After 10 guitars I would buy this again

Measure twice.

Never hurts to check—intonation depends on it.

I've got every type of precision rule, dial and digital caliper out to 28", but the Saddlematic is so simple and easy. Every guitar that crosses my bench gets a quick check of the saddle placement. You have to take time to set it up out of the box—carefully positioning the indicator points. Once its set the first time, it only takes seconds to check a saddle placement.

One less thing to think about as I assess other needed repairs.

Good tool but needed some tweaking

I like the tool but adjusting the pins was very difficult. I just didn't feel like I had them dialed in properly and that left me doubting the usefulness of the tool. So, I modified the tool and used two small brads the same size as the pins and measured them to the correct length. Then I super glued the largest bone saddle I could find to the brads. Now I can place the saddle in the bridge slot, line up the brads with the top and bottom strings easily and the bridge is better secured so it doesn't move around when I'm taping it in place. I think I get a better reading and feel more confident that it is correct. I tested on existing guitars and the saddle lined up dead on. Worked perfectly on the last guitar I just finished. With this modification, the tool is great.

Great for a first time builder.

I purchased the Saddlematic for my Stewmac 000 kit. I am glad I did because I was nervous about positioning the bridge and this was my first ever build. The only difficult part was setting the pointers accurately. Once done though this worked fantastic and my intonation was spot on.

Does it right

I'm a new builder, currently on 3, so I don't have an awful lot of expertise here, however I can say having this tool really made putting the bridge in the correct place a lot easier! The only challenge I've found in using it is making dead sure the bridge is in line with the fingerboard lines before attempting to locate the saddle, but once you do that, it is simple to figure out how far up or back your saddle should be. Good product. Simple to use. Not expensive. A+

Not too bad

The metal tangs should be bent at 90 degrees to allow for more precise measurements from the face of the tool. In my case the tangs were at such an obtuse angle that I couldn't reach 1/16 of an inch from the face of the tool without bending the tangs. The tangs are well made and very hard steel so bending them takes a vice and a hammer. Other wise not a bad jig.

Thought to make one of these myself...

... as I thought it a little on the expensive side. Decided to just go ahead a buy it. My time has got to be worth a few $$ for the hour or so it'd take. Not only helped correctly locate the correct spot for the saddle/replacement bridge I was installing, it revealed that the ORIGINAL saddle had been incorrectly located.
