Precision Notched Straightedge

About This Item

A StewMac Original, the Precision Notched Straightedge allows you to accurately check the flatness of your fingerboard, quickly measure neck relief, locate problem areas, and determine if truss rod adjustments are necessary.

2-in-1 tool: Not only is it great for checking the flatness of your fingerboard but you can also use it to check your fret leveling by placing it directly on top of the frets.

Made in the USA of German/Austrian stainless steel. You won't find this level of quality with cheap knockoffs!

Each of our straightedges go through a rigorous 13-step manufacturing process that guarantees accuracy to +/- .0015" per foot.

These straightedges are extremely precise, heavy duty, and designed to handle a lifetime of use in your shop. Before each one gets shipped, it's personally inspected before leaving the factory.

Machined from ultra-high-grade stainless steel, our StewMac Notched Straightedge won't bend or dent as easily as the aluminum straightedges on the market. The satin finish allows you to mark it with a pencil in order to make notes or to compare one guitar’s setup to another.

  • Guaranteed accuracy to +/- .0015" per foot
  • 1/8" thick 420 German/Austrian stainless steel
  • Individually inspected to ensure precise tolerances
  • Proudly made in Ohio, USA

High Quality Tool

I bought one of those cheap eBay imitations for $14. It wasn't much to lose so I thought I'd check it out. It came bent, was stamped out without being machined on the measuring edges, and it wasn't even level. Lesson learned.

The StewMac tool I ordered is a fine instrument. It's about twice the thickness of the cheap one, and is very precisely machined. Just be sure to exercise care when using it so you don't scratch the fretboard.

Oh, and the cheap one took almost two weeks to arrive. StewMac sent me the good one in the usual two days, even with standard shipping.

Precision Notched Straightedge

I've been gigging for 0.5 centuries and thought it was about time to learn how to take care of my instruments. I've purchased these for my guitars and basses - makes it really easy to see what the issues are and what needs to be done.

High quality tool, will be using this for many years to come

So far I've used this straight edge for setups. It's well made and significantly increases accuracy on neck adjustments. Fits many fretboards due to the 2 different scales. I'm looking forward to using this tool for many more years to come. Overall great buying experience, as always with Stew Mac!

A must

Part of my basic tool setup. Edge are very sharp though. I like to know if it's my fingerboard or the fret that need adjustment. That the perfect tool for this purpose.

Better mousetrap

Now that I have this notched straightedge, I wonder how I got along without it. When you have the right tools for the job, its much more satisfying working on your own instruments.

This item is a must have and because any "real" guitar setup can't be done without one. This is the absolute starting point!

An important tool for leveling and setups

By

Since I've added the notched straightedge to my workbench, I've found it to be more useful than a flat straightedge for adjusting the neck. Once the fingerboard is perfectly flat, then I can properly check and level the frets. This seems to have been an important step I was missing before, which limited me from doing the best job possible on the frets, and thus, a less than ideal condition for the setup as well.

Like the other commenters, I want to say that the edges are sharp, and careful handling is required. But this is a very substantial piece of precision metal and quite heavy, so it should last for several lifetimes.
