StewMac Precision Fret Puller

About This Item

Get ready for the smoothest fret removal ever!
Improved chip-stopping performance, control, and comfort.

  • Jaw tips are precision-ground to the perfect angle (detailed below).
  • Better visibility of the work through the larger throat opening.
  • Longer handles are more comfortable—our hands thanked us after a full fret removal.

"The shallow grind gets right under the fret ends for easy walk out removal." — StewMac's R+D Team

We tested various designs and jaws to find the ultimate angles for extraction. Our Precision Pullers are meticulously ground to our specifications:

The outer face is ground and polished to be flush with the fingerboard, and glide under the fret crown edge.

Inner jaw tips are ground to a 45-degree angle to gently nudge the fret free of its slot as the jaws close. By carefully exerting less force on the fret wire, the smoother action eliminates unwanted chipping, especially if you've loosened the glue a bit with a warm soldering iron.

When working with dry and difficult fretboards, use the Precision Pullers with our Chip Stoppers for an extra layer of confidence in a chip-free and hassle-free job.

Do not use pullers to cut fretwire—the custom ground jaws can be damaged if used for anything other than pulling.

  • Smooth spring action for excellent control
  • Comfortable rubberized handles
  • Sturdy steel construction
  • Overall length: 6"
  • Throat depth: 1"
  • Face width: 3/8"

Great on Maple Fretboards

Tried a very similar design during a class at the American School of Luthiery -- but those were available only from a supplier in Japan. The StewMac version works just as well, and the price is nice. Used these while refretting an electric bass with a maple fingerboard: made fret removal much easier, and the jaws worked well with the chip-stopper. Next up: a full refret on an acoustic with a bound fingerboard. These plus the chip-stopper should speed things up and also save time by minimizing dings in the binding. Recommended.

Works great!

I bought the precision fret puller to replace an old, improvised, tool and couldn't be happier! I used it on a re-fret job the day after I got the package and it did a great job in combination with my StewMac chip-stoppers. It really made the walk-out easy and smooth. Great tool!

These are excellent fret pliers with a (fixable) problem.

Because these pliers have much sharper blade angle (the part you squeeze under the fret), these work significantly better than the classic fret pullers we are used to using. These can pull just about any fret even glued in frets. However, in some instances the older pullers are needed to pull the fret all the way out. I would give these five stars, except that the handles don't have enough plastic. Just one complete refret will generate blisters. (And I do a lot of refrets.) However, you can wrap the handles in electrical tape or dip in plastic made for plier handles and problem solved. Well worth the money.
