StewMac Fret Cutter

About This Item

Spend less time filing fret ends!
This is the best tool for trimming the ends off fretwire.

A Stewart-MacDonald exclusive, our custom-made steel cutter has improved features you won't find on hardware store nippers.

The jaws are specially hardened for fret work, and they're profiled and flush-ground to cut the wire close to the fretboard. The result is a cleaner cut without pulling the wire, so you'll need less filing. Longer rubber-coated handles allow better access to the frets over a guitar body.

1" (25.4mm) jaw width, 8" (203.20mm) length.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Only for the frets

My second one i bought from Stew, gotta say, if you're dumb like me , someday you see yourself trying to snap the end of a nail with this cutter, the next thing you know is that the nail if fine while your cutter is dead!

NOW when it comes to fretwork, this is the best thing you'll ever find , althought i wouldn't use it with SS frets of course!

If i ever snap one pair i'll get the Stewmac again for sure!

I have had these for over 10 years. They work great.

Multi Purpose Tool

Not only is this excellent as a fret cutter, getting up flush with where you need to trim, but doubles as a wonderful fret puller, preserving the fret board by gently rocking the fret out, it gives added support to keep fingerboard chipping to a minimum.

Good tool, not intended for stainless steel

It can cut stainless steel but I don't knoe for how long, cause every cut leaves a dend on the cutting edge.
Also, its edge it not flush with fretboard surface like a Chinese one I have

Another Tool Needed

Have a NOS fretted board for Harmony guitar but it is even top to bottom. The neck I'm putting it on, a Silvertone Jupiter, is narrower at the nut so I'll need to trim the frets a bit and sand down the binding some before I glue the fretboard on.
Great tool.

Have not had a need to use this cutter, yet. But I am happy to know that I have it for when the occasion arises. Looks to be very well made and I don't think I'll be disappointed when the time comes.

Fret Cutter

These cutter's work better than anything you can buy off the shelves of a hardware or tool store. They may look similar, but they are not when it comes to performance. My only regret is that I didn't buy them 8 years ago.

Great Time Saver!

When I started out doing fretwork, I bought an inexpensive end cutting pliers. They worked fine, but left way too much material to file flush to neck. This Fret Cutter cuts super clean and close to fingerboard saving you time and effort. Top quality tool ( I'm a Prototype Machinist Toolmaker, so I know my tools.) that's worth the price, one of the best you buy! I've had mine for several years and it's as sharp as it's first use.
