What took me so long

They say tools expedite the process, and this fret press caul, matched with the radiused inserts, does just that.

I was able to put it in the drill press and put it on vice grips to make jaws with it. I’m very happy with this well made tool.

One way to install frets

This is a well manufactured part. I modified a 1 ton press to use in my last fret job. All the frets were level except for one and I probably had some dust in the slot before I used the press.

I was hammering frets, it works but not nearly as smooth as this. I just chuck it up in my drill press.

Great Tool

I wish I had quit hammering frets earlier. This tool does the job much better and a lot less violently. The resultant fret job looks much better too. The frets don't have that slightly battered look and come out perfectly smooth. My only quibble is the price.

Only way to insert fret wire

Using this caul in my arbor press has been a life saver when it comes to my ukulele builds. The wires go in uniformly with absolutely no damage to the fret board. This tool has been a godsend for me.

I used my own arbor press and cinched my frets into the slots.

Non leveling Press

Fretting a Flat new Rosewood Fingerboard resulted in random fret depths in the order of 10-15 thousandths side to side on 40% of the frets. The Fret press caul was used with a similar press to the SM #4480, with a Steel flat plate under the fingerboard with the steel plate resting on the extended level feet off the press. The fingerboard was centered under the shaft of the press and the frets were fully pressed into the fingerboard.
The result was uneven seating , fret to fret and side to side.
I have had to remove and reset about 40% of the frets and redo them by hammering them in.

I would not recommend this tool.

awsome !!!

This is by far the best way I have found to install frets. Rather than noisily banging away with a hammer for what seems like forever, this presses the frets in nice and quiet and fast. The result is much more accurate than any hammering job, requiring much less leveling and dressing afterwards.

As the caul swivels in the drill press, it is self-aligning to a degree. Rather than pressing the entire fret straight down, I prefer to press one side, then the other, and then the center, much the same way you would hammer a fret. There is much less stress on everything that way as well. You'll still want a fret hammer for touch-ups, but you won't need it much. And don't forget the glue - I like white glue for frets - it makes the installation much stronger, dries clear, and cleans up easily.
