Freehand Holder

About This Item

Spray a better finish with less work! Our versatile guitar body holder makes spray finishing easier and more efficient.

How do you hold a guitar body to spray a finish? Hang it on a ceiling hook and weave around it while you trip over your spray hose? Fasten it to a stick and hold it up until your arm cramps? Prop it up and hope it doesn't fall over when you bump your worktable?

The unique Freehand Holder is our new solution. It's an easier way to hold a body or neck securely, for a more uniform finish.

Freehand Holder includes:
• Sturdy steel frame
• Rotating handwheel shaft
• One solidbody attachment
• One acoustic attachment

Clamp the sturdy steel frame into your vise and fasten the guitar body or neck to the rotating handwheel shaft. Attachments for solidbody and acoustic neck joints are included. Now simply turn the wheel as you spray. The body moves to you, not the other way around, for easy, uniform spray coverage. A smoother finish means you'll save time and effort at the sanding stage, too.

The wheel has Allen-adjustable resistance. To switch bodies quickly for production finishing, extra body attachments are available separately—you can spray one while another dries.

You'll probably discover other work-saving uses for the Freehand Holder, we'd love to hear about it!

Reasonable value

This is so much easier than mounting handles to the body and neck. It is sturdy and a reasonable value. I would much rather build guitars than build a fixture. My only suggestion is there is not a safe way to hang the guitars after spraying them. It would be more useful if there were eyes welded to the attachments for hanging the work on a hooks.

As always StewMac came through as promised. I live in Canada and received my order within days as promised. I have made many purchases from StewMac and can’t remember a company with the level of customer support they provide. My only complaint is the high shipping costs which is not the fault of StewMac and something that I will have to live with.

Finally !!!

For years, I've been painting my bodies with them laying on a Lazy Susan and turning them as necessary. It worked OK for the front and back, but the sides were always iffy. This finally went on sale. Merry Christmas to me!

Great Idea_Poor Execution!

I bought this tool for finishing two kits purchased from StewMac. One is an acoustic guitar with a bolt on neck (all StewMac components) and the other is an electric guitar. I like the concept....it makes perfect sense. The problem is that when I tried to use the tool, neither one of the adapters to fit the acoustic or the electric guitar body would fit. I had to modify both adapters to be able to use them on my projects. If you don't have the desire to do some serious mods in order to use these tools....don't buy this product. I did the mods and can now use the tool as intended but it took some time and frustration to get it done!

Design flaw

By

This is a sturdy piece of kit and a useful idea. But, as I use Stewmac routing templates for the mortise of my neck joints, it would have been sensible to ensure this tool would fit. It doesn’t!! The connector which attaches to acoustic guitars is too wide. So, I’ll have to make some sort of shim. Not an insurmountable problem, but an unnecessary frustration and very unlike Stewmac!

Response from StewMac

Hi Nick,
Thank you sharing your honest feedback with us. We're sorry to hear that our Freehand Holder's attachment for acoustic guitars did not work for you as you expected. If you are not satisfied with a product, you are welcome to return it for a refund or exchange.

To mount the acoustic attachment to a neck block, we recommend crafting a wooden shim to custom-fit the mortis in your guitars' neck joints (a picture of this shim is diplayed in a photo at the top of this product webpage). We advise using this shim rather than drilling unnecessary holes through the neck block.

Saves a lot of hassle.
My only complaint is that the extra individual guitar clamps are a little over priced.
All in all I am glad I have it.

Nice!

This thing works great, but I wish it came with a "brody wheel" that fits in the threaded fitting on the wheel. Will find one or make one.

Hugely helpful!

This has greatly improved my finishing quality and speed. It's stable enough to support an electric body, yet still spill quickly and easily. There are a few extra features I have thought of while using that would make it even better: 1) a thumb screw on the Holder to lock out the swivel action - for when you want to keep one side up for a bit. 2) Some kind of system or attachment so you can hang or stand up the attachment when it's not on the holder - because I will apply a coat of finish to one guitar, then need to move it somewhere else to do another. Currently, I am hanging them from coat hangers from a suspended beam... sketchy 3) pinch the bend in the electric body attachments back further, it can be a bit hard to access that bit of the body just below the neck pocket.

Great tool... just missing ONE thing!

I love this tool and for bolt-on bodies and necks it does an excellent job. I used it for everything from standing to finishing.

The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is for set neck instruments its essentially worthless. They need to come up with something to hold a set neck.

Just buy the darn thing already!

I tried to finish a bass using a variety of rigged-up contraptions (dowels, hangers, clamps, etc.) and it ended up a drippy mess since it was so time-consuming and imprecise to keep adjusting it to get to all the nooks and crannies. I finally broke down and bought one of these, got it clamped to a vise, and I've been grinning from ear-to-ear ever since. Well built, super easy to use...a great design! Just make sure you clamp it to a vise that's screwed down or very, very heavy or it'll get tipsy on you!
