Mojotone Pickup Winding Machine

About This Item

Programmable! Remembers your most-used pickup specs. Set the number of coil wraps you need, and the spindle automatically slows to a stop when it reaches that point.

Mojotone worked with Stewart-MacDonald and top guitar techs to develop this rugged professional winder. Sturdy enough for serious pickup production, the Mojotone Pickup Winding Machine is also great for quick rewinds and prototyping.

Using the text display, set the number of winds and turning direction. Then smoothly rev up to your desired RPM—any speed up to 1,800 turns per minute. The winder stops when your number of winds is reached. If that's a number you'll need again, save it as a preset.

Free winding mode is also available, giving you manual control of the number of turns and winding direction.

"The 10 programmable presets come in real handy. For vintage rewinds, I like having the specs saved and ready to go."
Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Good for a lot of university lab usage - only one minor issue

By

We had undergraduate students use this machine for a lot of work and it held up great. Only after a year did the Free Mode start to act wonky on us by not staying at 0 RPM even though the speed knob was at zero. I opened the case and noticed some of the connectors to the internal boards are common single female ended jumper wire pushed down onto male header pins and then hot-glued into place?! Just moving around a few leads got the machine back in fine shape. We will hard solder the wires at the end of this semester and see if the problem ever returns. Other than this, it is a great unit. We attached a large wooden board to the bottom for stability and to mount it in the lab with a cable lock

Good upgrade

So I didn't give it 5 star because taking it out of the box, I noticed the right button was broken off. Wondering if I contact StewMac or Mojo to fix this issue?

The one I was sent came with two screws so you can securely attached a humbucker bobbin. To do a single coil you have to use an allen wrench to take the piece off that spins, and embed the screw in the middle for securing single coils. For humbucker bobbins, the metal keeper bar that the screws hold on will slightly scuff the bobbin, so I might still use my other winder for exposed bobbins.

I like the pickups I've made so far, and there's no worry of the bobbin flinging off like the other winders that use double sided tape.

The gauss meter is interesting, yet I'm not sure what to do with it aside from looking for consistency across my magnets.

Expensive, but completely worth it.

I finally got around to purchasing one after seeing it for a year. A very well thought out unit. The gauss meter works well, the counter adjustability is easy to use and the speed control is smooth. It is a bit noisy (due to straight-cut drive gears I assume), but not annoying. It has more capability than any other over-the-counter winder I have used. It's expensive for a hobbyist, but on par for a small professional shop, and should pay for itself after 10 or so rewinds....good cause I have seven jobs in cue now.

Great product, well pecked. Arrived within 2 weeks to the UK as promissed. 4 stars for a lack of UK plug, though

Great for the serious winder...

This machine is very smooth running and easy to control which means less chance of making birds nests instead of pickups. The programing is a bit confusing and I have to consult the manual if I want to save my previous winding data but you can get what you need pretty easily just by punching it in on the fly. Mojotone is a great company though and I'm glad Stew-Mac picked them up. This machine is fast too so you can get your work done. Just don't daydream while your winding or you might end up with a ball of wire on your feet.

a really good coil winder for the hobbyist

it would make a very good production winder if the rpm was 4000 or more - that's its only sore point. 1800rpm takes too long to wind any coil.

The perfect noisemaker

So... It came without the speed knob. Yes, I checked the packaging and carton. Luckily I have many. Still very annoying especially due to the price.
I also had to modify (wedge) the guide arm into the clamp as I bent a allen/hex key trying to tighten it. This was a mango tree in winter: fruitless. At full crank the arm still slid out.
Second to last, it's noisier that a tree full of cockatoos. I thought this may be a teething problem, but no, after a couple of weeks of winding it still drowns out the music in my workshop. And I listen to Death Metal.
Lastly, there's no more complaints. It's a great machine for winding Does all the things it's supposed to do. A huge upgrade from the last no-longer-made model I had.

Great winding machine!

I use this machine daily and it is so easy to use. The programmable feature is hard to beat because I can program my standard winds and just repeat them without setting up the machine each time. I also really like that it stops on it own when it reaches the programmed number of turns too. It has everything I need! VERY VERY happy with this machine! AAAA++++++++
