StewMac Binding Scraper

About This Item

The secret to clean, professional looking bindings
Use this scraper to remove color from bindings before spraying your topcoats. You get clean sharp edges with this perfectly shaped tool.

The angled tip gets into tight places and the knife edge handles bindings of any size. A rounded safe edge makes the blade comfortable to grip.

The great finishing and restoration expert Tom Murphy demonstrates this scraper in our Trade Secrets video #200. Tom shows clearly why masking the binding can never equal the clean results of scraping.

Easy to sharpen
Simply draw the blade across a flat file to keep it sharp, as shown in the Trade Secrets video.

Made of spring steel.

Dimensions:
7" x 15/32" (178mm x 11.91mm) long
0.050" (1.27mm) thick

Great tool! I was going to try to make on from a hacksaw blade, but I'm glad I bought this instead. Very sturdy, straight, and easy to keep sharpened.

Simple but elegant

Simple but invaluable tool if you're doing any scaping (especially binding). If you think you have any application, they don't cost very much - just get one.

Good tool, a little pricey

I watched Tom Murphy use a similar tool and knew I had better get one like it. Stewmac came through with a good, durable tool for a potential finicky job. Price ain't bad until shipping gets involved. Highly recommend this tool.

Nothing fancy...  just the right tool.

Great length, decent width and an overall perfect simple tool for scraping binding. The surprise was how often I reach for it to do a zillion other little scraping chores around the shop.

It's become one of the "front & center" tools on my workbench. Good job you guys.

Once again, I was duped

I really thought I was getting a great tool with a specific design. What I got was a two bit hunk of steel that I paid 8 bucks for. Get this... it's not even ready to use. It literally is just a hunk of steel. I have to file it, and shape it to use for binding scraping. I know some of you think I am being pathetic, and that is the way it is, but imagine you bought drill bits that were just rods, and you had to make them into drill bits, or you had to shape your own screwdriver, or a knife with no blade. Bad pool StewMac. I am not happy with this at all.

Good little tool

I know, it would not be difficult to make one, but for the price, it is a dandy little tool. Seems to be made out of good steel and has a nice sharp edge. The length makes it much easier to hold than a razor blade. I like it a lot.

Great Scraper

Square on one edge, round and smooth on the other. Takes a little honing to get it really nice, but great right out of the box. Good steel. I didn't give it 5 overall because it is expensive; but a great scraper. You will be happy with this for a long time.

A real binding scraper

By

For many years I have used single edge razor blades for scraping. But then I saw a clip online from Gibson´s finishing department. I saw a couple of ladys scraping binding with a long blade and they really made me envious with their technique. They used long strokes and after just a few the had the Les Paul top finished.

I understood that the long blade made control easier than my short razor blades. So when I saw Stewmacs ad for these, I immediately ordered three. And now I´m practising to get the same sure strokes. Give me another fiv years ...

But - I think the edges wear out to fast. Is it possible to get them hardened?
