Three-in-one Fret File

About This Item

Designed by master luthier Michael Gurian.

When we're asked to recommend just one fret file, it's gotta be the 3-in-1. It's been popular since Michael Gurian designed it over 20 years ago. The angle in the shaft lifts the handle up away from the guitar, protecting the top. Since it has 3 interchangeable cutters it works for all fret widths, from basses to mandolins.

Steel shank, wooden handle. Overall length is 7" (178mm).
Each burr is 1-7/8" (47.63mm) long.

Replacement burrs sold separately.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Pretty good, but I feel the burr wears too quickly

By

I like the way this tool feels, uh brilliant I use it for a long time. Though most fret crowning tools are a bit uncomfortable. I have only used the wide burr, and only on one 24 fret nickel-steel bass neck. It seems to be cutting less already as I try my second guitar neck 'Stratocaster style' with stainless steel frets. It's not cutting along the full length of the burr, it seems to only cut if I tilt the tool backwards.

When it was new it worked well. But I can't believe I have to buy another burr after one instrument.

Works good, but...

Works good, but the way this tool is used it should have incorporated some sort of rubber rest for your forefinger. It gets a bit uncomfortable after an hour or so. Overall, it is a good tool - an essential one - that saves a ton of time as opposed to doing things the old-fashioned way. The true test is if the burros stand the test of time.

Fret rounding file

I have a guitar that just would not intimate on the G string. Action was set up well, but frets had been leveled, and we're terribly flat. After dressing the first fret with a flat file, I realized that doing 23 more would be a major undertaking.
I broke down, and ordered the 3 in one fret rounding file, and I'm glad I did.
It's the right tool for the job. It works wonderfully. Burrs cut smoothly, and cleanly. Pretty hard to botch a fret. Just mark it with a sharply, and file till the mark is gone. Polish, and done. Worth every penny.

Works great!

Just got this, used it on a bass that I just built. Not only made it easy to deal with the problem fret with the strings still on, but used it to round the edges off a bit too.

I’m new to working on guitars, and this was perfect for a kit I’m building. Perfectly crowned frets after I used it.
