JLD Bridge Doctor

About This Item

• Enhances volume
• Flattens 'bellied' soundboards

A unique solution to a common bridge problem, this spruce device attaches beneath a guitar bridge. An adjustable spruce "pressure post" rests against the tail block, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard.

The spruce block is 3/4" x 1-5/8" x 3-3/8" tall. The 1/4"-diameter tension rod is 9" long. The mounting post has three different positions to accomodate a variety of bridge styles.

Screw mount: This spruce device attaches beneath the bridge via an inlaid screw (a white pearloid dot is included to hide the bridge screw). An adjustable spruce pressure post rests against the tail block, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard. Better bridge contact and alignment can also enhance sound projection.

Brass pin mount: The pin-mounted version of the JLD Bridge Doctor attaches beneath the bridge using a threaded brass bridge pin. The strings mount horizontally through the tops of the matching brass bridge pins (included).

StewMac Tech Tip: We recommend the brass pin mount version for 12-string guitars.

Bridge doctor

This works great. I installed this on a Takamini that had begun to form a ridge behind the bridge. After adjusting in small increments over 4 days, no ridge. With the bonus that this 1978 Tak turned into a boomer. I don’t know for sure if I needed that much time. I just wanted to go slow to avoid a disaster. A little pressure and a moderate amount steam at a time work for me.

Great fix for a cheap guitar

A friend of my son was throwing away an old Harmony Marquis acoustic with a bad belly bulge. I have never tackled a pot bellied guitar before so I gave it a try.
I originally came on here looking for a tool I saw in a video but stumbled across this. I had cautious optimism based on the video and reviews but I am very pleased with the results. this took me less than a half hour despite looking over the directions a couple times before every drilling or cut. I never heard it before I worked on it because the action was about an inch at the sound hole end of the board, but it sounds clear, loud and a little bright.
My son has grabbed the guitar twice since I sat to write this review, so he likes it to.

Gibson Saved!

A 2016 J200 came into my shop with high action. Another shop had diagnosed a neck reset was needed. The Bridge Dr corrected the bellying behind the bridge resulting from the very flexible top and associated bracing. The action is now perfect and the tone was positvely affected by the device.

Simple install, works as advertised

Bought this hoping to lower the action on a budget priced Yamaha which was experiencing some bellying. It worked perfectly. I did about the sloppiest, most slapdash install I can imagine, and it still worked. Be aware that not all high acoustic actions are the result of bellying. This got the action halfway to where I want it, but it absolutely did what it’s supposed to. The body behind the bridge is much flatter. Didn’t do an A/B sound check before and after, but it’s one of the nicest sounding cheap guitars I’ve heard, and it still is after installing the bridge doctor.

Review Update

2 weeks in, and the old cheap Yamaha just keeps getting better.
I would copy the thing (it would take me about 45 minutes) but I am so happy with it, I want it's original maker to stay in business forever.
I will be buying more of these units to repair 2 other old guitars... an ovation 6 string, and an old Yamaha 12 string. Thank You JLD and Stew-Mac.

I installed this on an old Yamaha G-60A 6 string classical acoustic.
This instrument has a very narrow bridge, so the closest screw position just barely allowed for correct placement under the bridge. I was concerned the narrow fulcrum and the plywood top was going to be an issue requiring a lot of extra force on the pressure screw. This guitar also has a tall back rib below the bridge which required modification to the Bridge Doctor unit. 2 minutes on a disk grinder, and I nerfed a little bit off the bottom side of the unit, then was able to install it . The very small sound hole, and long reach to the bridge made for a difficult installation. Even so, in about 15 minutes (including re-tuning) I was playing it.

There was a huge improvement right away... the top is nearly flat already, the action is 25% lower at the 20th fret, and tone is already better. I can't wait to see how it seasons in over time.

Although this product is not particularly difficult to install, it does require some skill and experience as a wood worker. I am by no means a Luthier, but I have been working hardwoods into furniture for 40 years. If in doubt, have it installed by a professional.

Good fix

This works as offered. I had to trim the top of the bridge Dr. because the guitar was a thinner body than most acoustic guitars (Epiphone PR5) . But it fixed the problem and as others have said it does seem to be louder. I'm happy with the fix. I'l buy another to fix a 12 string I have on the bench.

I have installed more than 30 of these and I can't recommend them enough. In fact, I believe the bridge Dr should become standard equipment for all acoustic guitars! Preventative medicine is the best!!!
