Chip Stoppers, Set of 2

About This Item

Fewer chips, cleaner refrets, less work. Tired of gluing back fingerboard chips after pulling up old frets? Our steel Chip Stoppers™ work with our Fret Puller to minimize chip-out.

Chip Stoppers are a clever solution from Don MacRostie here at StewMac, and a big hit in our shops.

The problem with refrets is, any pulled fret might yank a piece of fingerboard up with it. Then if you're lucky, you'll manage to glue each chip back in.

Chip Stoppers press down on the fingerboard as the Fret Puller takes frets out. You get fewer chips, and cleaner refrets. Too bad we didn't think of this twenty years ago — imagine the hours we all would have saved!

Here's how they work:
Heat the fret as usual, with a chisel-tip soldering iron to soften glue under the fret.

Now lift the end of the fret, getting under it with the jaws of the Fret Puller. As soon as it starts coming out, slide the Chip Stopper into place; the .033" x 3" slot fits around the fret tang. Now you can walk the Fret Puller down the length of the fret, lifting it out as the Stopper protects the wood underneath.

Most often, you'll use the .020" Chip Stopper. Sometimes the .010" will suit you better, and you can also combine them for a .030" total thickness.

Purchased these after watching one of Stew-Mac's videos, Using the soldering iron technique along with these made pulling frets easy, relatively quick and no chipping. Nice and clean.
Definitely good investment!

Handy But Not Essential

Being worried about wood chipping, when doing my first, personal partial re-fret job, I bought these. It turned out that I really did not need them for my project (having a well-oil fret board helped reduce the chipping). I used the thinner one, while pulling the old fret wires with the StewMac Fret Cutter, and they came out cleanly. They are handy but may not be essential for your particular re-fret project. If you are a pro, or are re-fretting an older instrument (with a dry fret board), or are re-fretting an expensive instrument, I would highly recommend using chip stoppers.

I've used the original StewMac fret removal tool for years with good results. How can you improve on something that works? Well, StewMac sure did. I ordered the new fret removal tool/chip stopper combo and first used them of a partial refret for a Mexican Strat neck.. After heating the frets with a resistance soldering iron, I pulled 7 frets with not one chip. The combo of the new fret removal tool and the chip stoppers worked better than expected. If I were to recommend one final improvement for this tool, I'd like to see slightly longer handles. That would certainly be icing on the cake for a great tool.
