3-Corner Fret Dressing Files

About This Item

Specially made for traditional fret crowning and shaping.

Smooth corners protect the fretboard.
These special files are for those who prefer a traditional method of fret crowning. Their smooth corners won't leave scratches in the fretboard, and they're great for shaping the ends of the frets.

The small fine-cut file has 3" x 1/8" tapered cutting surfaces, and the medium-cut file has 5" x 1/4" tapered surfaces. The large file is known as a cant saw file, and is a favorite of our fret expert Dan Erlewine and many other well-known luthiers. It has a versatile flattened-triangle shape, with a 4-5/8" x 1/2" and two 4-5/8" x 5/16" cutting surfaces. All files have comfortable rubber-coated handles.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

I couldn’t buy all the fretting files, so I bought the recommended all-around file. This works great for most fret work. Very well made.

The best file for fret crowning, PERIOD

I purchased an entire set of tools from Amazon when I first decided to get into doing fretwork. While I saved a lot of money, it was a huge waste. I purchased two sets of jewelry files from Amazon to do fret crowning and butchered the job. They were nowhere near the quality needed for real, professional work. So my wife purchased a gift card for Stew Mac, knowing that I love the youtube channel, for my birthday. I decided to go ahead and try out the medium 3 corner fret file since it seemed like the most straight forward, versatile file sold. I was correct. The quality of this file is amazing. The quality is on a higher level than the cheap chinese trash I had purchased prior. I cannot recommend this enough. I will be purchasing MANY more products from Stew Mac. I can't stress it enough, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON CHEAPER ALTERNATIVES - it's NOT worth it. Sure, I spent over 30 dollars on a single file, but I will NEVER need another one after that.

I'll probably buy the small and large, but the medium is really nice.

Worked Great

The medium 8" worked great to crown some frets after leveling. No fret board damage (was taped). It is not safe to use on fret ends unless you have a skilled hand, but the flat one they sell with the rounded edge does!

I bought this as part of my first real work on fret dressing. For the most part, it does a great job although I get a bit of fretboard scratching from the file edges when I tried it without fretboard protection. When I used the metal fret guard it also scratched that. All in all a very good tool, but it does take a bit of experience to master.
