Just starting gives me the basics

All the tools are really good quality. So far I’ve done some fretwork and action work. Did a good job for me. Looking forward to doing a complete fret job and some nut making. I’m not to comfortable with the fret eraser tool and it’s a bit useless for me so it’s 4 stars. Everything else will see lots of use. Recommended for those starting out on maintenance and repair.

Great quality but overpriced

No denying the quality of tools present here. StewMac knocked it out of the park with the development of these tools. However, the price point is a little steep for the limited number of jobs that can be performed - fretwork, nut shaping, and setup.

I've worked for two shops here in the city where I live, and the know how versus having the right tool sometimes doesn't match, specially fret issues. Even though I've learned a lot from a great Master Technician and along with experience, I wish this kind of stuff should've came out in the late 80's when I first started. Stewmac always had and continually has high standard of quality in their tools, design by technicians for technicians. you wanna get the job done right with quality of workmanship, then get good quality tool meant for the job! and this kit is just that... If your serious about being a great guitar tech and making a living at it,,then buy it! the right tool will reap good financial harvest for years to come along with knowledge and experience...

I got an opportunity to meet Dan and Tom Erlewine on a recent trip of theirs to NYC. I have always set up my own guitars, ordered stuff from StewMac and had been throwing around the idea of getting this starter kit to put my toes in the water so to speak. Well after meeting the Erlewine's and a couple of other luthiers on their trip here, I was entranced by the "problem solving" aspect of repair in the luthier world. I come from a long line of problem solvers. So I joined StewMac as a member and ordered the kit. Phil in customer service was great about honoring their lower price on Jan. 3rd as I had ordered on December 31.

Well I couldn't be happier and more thrilled. I am several baby steps away from pulling frets and setting in a new nut, but I did three fret leveling and dressing jobs on my own instruments with great results. Two Chinese instruments that needed the edges smoothed, some high spots set and or filed and then of course dressing. I was so happy with the results that I recorded with the bass the next day and used the guitar at rehearsal that night. Then I attacked my Highway One Tele which needed some TLC. I did a pass yesterday and still had a couple of slightly high spots when bending strings (which I do allot). So today I went fret by fret with the fret rocker, marked the high spots with a sharpie and then created a jig to raise the strings without removing them so that I could get in and work on those 5 or 6 frets easily. Quick set up with the string height gauge and voila, this thing plays like butter. Thanks guys. The wealth of knowledge on the videos and the enclosed written material made it all seem possible.

Awesome tool kit for the aspiring repairman/luthier

You can buy all these tools separately and waste a lot of time and money. I've been building telecasters and this kit helps me with set up, nut filing, fret dressing, etc. the only thing missing is a soldering iron! Go for it.

Don't "fret" about the price.

Stew Mac gets it right. The tools and supplies I have ordered here are without a doubt, the best. Yes you might find something at a lower price but you will not beat the quality. Almost all my luthier tools come from Stew Mac, they are the best.

A Great Tool Set

By

I have started working on guitars a lot more and I picked this set as my first purchase for my guitar tools. So far I'm very pleased with the set. Everything seems to be made with quality in mind.

Many people complain about the price. I don't understand why. Tools are an investment. Ask most car mechanics if they can buy a tool set around $500 that will cover most of their needs and they'll tell you that you are dreaming.

Yes you can buy or make cheaper tools, but are you willing to risk damaging you or your customer's guitars because you wanted to save a couple hundred dollars on your initial investment.

Take my advice. If the price is too high; just be patient, save your money, and then make the investment. This tool set will help you make better adjustments and save you time.

Granted, the Guitar Shop Starter Kit may be a little pricy, but I do believe it has the appropriate selection of quality tools to jump start your shop. Worth every penny in my opinion!

The same indisputable quality but inmho not a proper price: a must-have or unavoidable fee?

Outstanding value!

I have used every tool in this set. The quality is absolutely top notch. To date this set has been used to turn seven "lost cause" guitars to excellent players.

I've lost count of the guitars I've set up quickly and accurately. What used to be a painfully slow process of trial and error has become, relatively quick, easy and enjoyable.
