Nut + Saddle Making Tool Set

About This Item

Save with the set! Our money-saving set of the basic tools you'll need for professionally shaping, laying out string spacing, and slotting nuts and bridge saddles.

Everything you need to make a nut or saddle from scratch!

Shaping Files, set of 2 Also sold separately
Each steel file has two different cutting surfaces, and four cuts in all: Coarse, Medium, Fine, and Extra Fine. Using the files in combination, you can quickly refine a nut blank nut to a smooth shape, ready for final polishing.

Gauged Saw, 0.010" width Also sold separately
This versatile saw is perfect for starting new slots and trimming nuts, saddles, and other small parts, too.

Double-edge Files, set of 4 Also sold separately
These custom-sized files are designed to cut round-bottom slots. The full set lets you cut the correct sized slots for most acoustic or electric guitars you'll see.

Nut and Saddle Vise Also sold separately
Small but heavy, this handy custom-tapered vise features custom tapered jaws that stay out of the way of your files and tools.

String Spacing Rule Also sold separately
You can finally lay out proportional string spacing. This rule does that math for you—you'll never have a "crowded" string feeling again.

Feeler Gauges Also sold separately
A set of 11 steel gauges that allow precision filing of nut slot depths. These gauges are also useful for checking string-to-fret clearances.

These are the same quality tools we supply to busy repair shops! A great way to develop your skills with a modest investment in the proper tools.

Two tips for filing string slots at the nut

High action and a badly shaped nut: That’s the situation with the nut on this old May Bell guitar. Dan Erlewine lowers the nut slots while also “back filing” the nut so the strings angle down properly to the tuners.

Vise is ok. QC looks poor. Feeler Gauges do not include important measurements. For the individual price, it should include all needed gauges. Saw is good. The two files are good. The four nut files leave you wanting more sizes. The string spacing ruler is good. I had to go out and buy a better feeler gauge and more nut files. But some of that money didn't go to Stew Mac.

Great Files

So far have only used the saw and files but they work wonders. I do not have a ton of experience with repair/upkeep on old instruments but found an old harmony guitar in great condition save for a very high and uneven nut. After a bit of filing it plays wonderfully. Also extremely grateful for stewmac's description videos and instruction videos.

Great tool set, this job is so much easier with high quality tools. Pricey, but well worth the money if you shape or adjust nuts regularly. The vise comes in handy for a number of tasks & is now a permanent addition to my work table. A few nut replacements & this set has already paid for itself.

I'm delighted with my latest purchase from Stewmac that enables me to finally produce a professional-grade job on my electric guitar nuts. The files even worked well on the brass I had chosen for my latest custom build, and all the items are of top quality, just what we've come to expect from Stewmac. Thanks again, guys!

Good quality kit! I can also use the vice for a lot other stuff. Maybe it could be better if there were some markers on each side of the nut files which indicate the slot size! I do think this particular kit is pricey though.

Essential Nut Making Gem

Love it!! It makes nut and saddle alterations so quick and precise. I bought an unbleached nut also and with the instructions and some prior knowledge I crafted one in a couple of hours and it sounds great. I think every guitar workshop should have one.
