StewMac Solder Monster

About This Item

Four helping hands, plus tool storage and safety vent
The Solder Monster holds your work while you solder, with unique long tentacles to reach into guitar cavities. It grips tiny components or entire pickguards without scratching. Its built-in wire dispenser and tool storage rack keeps your bench neat and organized.

Work clean, without poisonous fumes
Solder smoke contains serious toxins. Soldering is close work, and those fumes are right in your face. The Solder Monster's fifth arm is a vent tube that hooks to your shop vac, sucking the smoke into your vacuum's filter (connection kit included). Put the intake tube near the solder joint, and vent away those poisons.
  • Four long posable arms hold large and small parts at any angle
  • Shrink-wrap covered clips grip without scratching
  • Keeps wire spools neatly within reach
  • Tool rack holds your soldering tools
  • Reduces benchtop clutter and mess
  • Vacuum hose for venting fumes

Escaped from the StewMac shop!
We developed the Monster for our own use, hand-soldering our Golden Age Pre-wired Pickguards and Wiring Harnesses. We needed to hold large and small items at any angle, without fussy adjustments. The octopus arms work great!

“I've tried pretty much every type of helping-hand tool, and this is the best one I’ve ever used.” — Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Crazy/Fantastic Product

I am not a luthier but i am a guitarist, a hobbyist woodworker, and I dabble a lot in electronics. The specialized tools offered by StewMac are both creative and top quality. I have always wanted to make a soldering contraption like this but StewMac beat me to it. It's perfect for my needs. My wife laughs every time she sees it and calls it "the gonkulator" (if you ever saw that old Hogan's Heroes episode). All the while I'm easily making perfect, shiny solder connections.

Nifty tool

Glad I bought this. I was hesitant at first because of the price. I have been using smaller flexible arms and getting frustrated. After setting it up I realized how valuable the long arms are. additionally, it keeps things organized.

Unleash the Monster!

Noticeably speeds up my big soldering jobs, no need for finger acrobatics or exposure to death fumes! Only concern is the wood frame that houses the Monster.....will it hold together over time?

cool but expensive

I agree with most of the other reviews. This is a super cool useful helping hands monster. It has the longest arms of any I have seen which allows it to get into guitar cavities. All the helping hands I have used in the past (even ones with long arms) were not long enough. However, I do feel it is a bit highly priced given the materials and the fact you have to assemble it yourself. Also as others have stated it would have been great to have a light mount but you can always rubber band a LED headlamp to one of the arms!

Cool Tool

I bought this last month (March 2018) and put it together fairly easily. I used it the first time just yesterday and it came in really handy. The arms work pretty well, but are a bit stiff. They take a little wrangling to get them set, but once set they stay put. I like that!

I used to juggle with solder, parts, and the like but this animal really helps relieve all that. The arms have plenty of reach and there's no problem with them being too short. It's also really great for storing all my wire spools, hand tools and the like. Helps keep my bench organized.

I have it loose, so I can move it around. It would be more stable if I bolted it down but I like flexibility too. It's heavy enough when loaded with wire and tools that it stays in place.

As was written above it would've been really nice to have one of the arms equipped with a light. The reason I'm going 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's unfinished, and it's pricey for what you get. There's no way the materials to build this justifies the high cost. Still, it's handy and I like it a lot. Way better than the little helping hands gizmo. Recommended!

Wouldn't believe it!

This is one device that I thought was somewhat ridiculous when I first saw it advertised. It wasn't until I caught myself at 2 am finishing up a repair. I'm working in a tight body cavity trying to hold a capacitor onto a circuit board while also holding the solder. The other hand is holding the iron and I'm trying not to burn my fingers. I purchased the solder Monster and now I'm the one feeling ridiculous that I didn't try this sooner. It's an indispensable soldering tool in my shop.

works great -  but the price?

Easily assembled and well thought out. It removes a lot of frustration - especially for the still inexperienced solderer, like myself.
HOWEVER: Considering that the customer only receives a kit, consisting of unfinished pine wood, plus some relatively generic hardware, I wonder how StewMac justifies the price. I personally felt a bit short-changed when I unpacked the product, especially since the word "kit" did not appear in the product description.

Great idea for production shops and high-volume repairs

By

When I first saw the “Solder Monster” I grinned. I’m very glad I watched the video about it. It is very definitely (to my mind) a production fixture. To compare it to the small “Helping Hands” fixtures is inappropriate. The “Solder Monster” and “Helping Hands” fill very different needs.

I’ve been an Electronics Tech since I ceased being a toddler. I’ve been rewiring instruments for over forty years. In that time, I have developed techniques and fixtures that work well (for me). Its bulk and the necessary setup time would actually be an inconvenience in my shop. I already have places to keep wire and solder. I also have capture and extraction solutions in place for solder fumes, glues & solvent fumes, dust & dirt, et cetera. And all manner of lighting & illumination options…

Possibly a logical next step would be to offer “Children of Solder Monster” (individual arms, fume pickup, …) for those of us who just need enhancements to our present holding solutions, but do not require the whole monster?

Brilliant Invention

I wish I had one of these thirty years ago when I first started tinkering with replacement pickups. Might I suggest one more addition that would be super-helpful? How about an LED light on one of the arms, to illuminate dark control cavities?
