So much information years worth. Getting ready to do my first re-fret this book will help

Great reference book

I think the book is a really great tool. Walks you through several fret jobs and oddities that one may find. Great overview on all the tool options available...and what each does. I will be doing my first refret this weekend.

More advertising than instruction

Not bad but skimpy on details. This is only a starting point. I found every job described here I required supplemental information off the internet to do correctly. Most annoyingly most of the jobs require use of the erlewine neck jig or other specialized expensive equipment which is not practical for most first timers. Mostly a advertising for stewmac specialized products. They should either give this away as a freebie or provide more practical how to information that doesn't require a huge capital investment right of the bat.

essential, specific information with real-world examples in color

I wasn't sure if the information in here would be redundant (I have 2 editions of the GP repair guide) but it really "fills in the gaps" (without using glue ;-) ).
I am glad I didn't dive into refretting without this book, even with the "yard sale specials" and "donor guitars". Each chapter is a different job on a different guitar - some entries are longer than others but all are worth reading and the photos are very good (and IN COLOR!).

Very Enjoyable and Useful Book

I was disappointed after ordering this book and reading some of the reviews before I received the book. However, once I had it in hand and cracked it open that all went away and I learned a lot more than expected. I used the knowledge gained in this book to evaluate and correct frets on a classical guitar I got on clearance because of a broken bridge. I got bored waiting a little extra time for the re-glue to cure so I checked the straightness of the neck, then evaluated the levelness of the frets and found they were way off, also upon close inspection I noticed the factory didn't do a very good job on the fret shaping either. After I finished using the skills I learned in this book, the frets are now level and shine like fine silver. The other thing about this book is it lets you know it's ok to work on one of those factory guitars (to break the seal so to speak), it has several examples of repair situations and a new fret job as well, all step by step. I never thought I would enjoy something as off beat as fret work, but thanks to this book I do because my work turns out excellent and I can take pride in it.

This is a super novice book. It is exactly what the title says, a step by step book. all of these steps can be found on YouTube with more depth for free.

Not what I expected

By

I was looking for detailed information in this step by step book on Fret Work. Many of the steps are there but most of the details about the work are not. This is in sharp contrast to Dan E's fine books like the "Guitar Player Repair Guide". Dan gives you tables, number and specs that are specific. This book is more general in nature and simply short of details. It is also thin and the price does not reflect that. To me this is way overpriced and the other book I mention is a good value for the money.

If you looking for a book that gives you all the info you need to do fret work I would look elsewhere...
