"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these."
—Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

Relic nickel tuners have cream plastic knobs with a matte finish.

—Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

—Paul Hostetter, luthier

These tuners look absolutely original. They brought my 1949 0-15 back to where it belongs.

Just what I needed

Ordered these to replace the original tuners on my '68 Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean I'm restoring. Some minor differences, but close enough.

Bushings are oversized

By

I installed this set on an early 2000's Harmony Sovereign reissue (Buck Owens red, white and blue) because I wanted the look of open frame tuners and cream colored plastic buttons. Tuners look good (bright nickel), appear to be well made, and are fairly smooth in gearing, but I realized after I'd already enlarged the bushing holes in the peghead that the bushings had oversized inner diameters, to the point of a sloppy fit between the bushings and string posts. Sorry, I don't have a caliper to confirm the measurements. Had I realized this sooner, though, I would have kept the original bushings on the guitar because they were a much better fit to the string posts.

Better than Martin's tuners

I bought these tuners to replace the original Martin tuners. I love them.

Nice but needs mods

Perfect fit on 1988 Martin 00-16M to replace originals but has 3 problems: 1) Works off compression, cap not screwed into place 2) Cap has slack, needs bushing 3) No washer included to cover any gaps. That being said, I was able to overcome this and the tuners work well, look good, and are moderately priced as well.

Perfect for any Vintage series Martin

Why Martin put butterbeans on a 2006 0018V is beyond me, but as I have a 1944 00-18, I know that ivoroid-white tuners are correct, and these have the correct back plate. You will need bushings, which isn't really correct. However, they look much better for obvious reasons.

These are the Best for true Restoration

I have a 44 scalloped brace Martin 00-18 acquired some time ago. The plastic knobs were cracking or gnarled. I put on Klusons and thought that would be it. Then I saw these--the obvious replacements. I didn't even need screw holes. They fit perfectly, with no change to the front of the peghead (perfect fit). What could be more satisfying?

Not Too Bad

This is a nice looking set for a reasonably modest price. The only problem I had was that one of the six was just a tad off center - binds a little halfway around the turn. But since it went on a fairly modest guitar, and still does its job, I left it alone. Nevertheless, I might still get this set again in the future.
