Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Slotted Peghead Guitar - Square-end

About This Item

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these." —Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Pre-war style tuners reborn!
Our replica 3-on-plate tuners featuring square worm supports on rectangular steel plates. Their improved 15:1 gear ratio provides better tuning than the originals, and our popular relic nickel finish complements vintage hardware. Available with original-shape cream or black plastic knobs.

Golden Age tuners are available exclusively from StewMac, made with our expert eye for details and exact specifications.

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. They add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.
  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • Original-shape matte cream or matte black plastic knobs
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws incuded)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
  • Relic nickel finish
Also available to fit solid pegheads and for 12-string guitar.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right." —John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional." —Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuning Machine Drill Jig for Slotted Pegheads ensures the correct 1-3/8" string roller spacing for accurate tuning.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Installing the Tuning Pegs

By

Verified Buyer

David, from Redwood City CA wrote on 9-24-18 that once he had put the new tuners on he realized that he had to turn the pegs in the opposite direction as the old tuners. Looking at his photo, it may be that he put them on the wrong sides of the peghead. I'm pretty sure they should be installed with
the post closer to the end of the peghead, and the worm gear underneath. In his photo they are installed opposite that. The worm gears are "on top." Maybe that's the problem. Try switching them.

Excellent, perfect fit for my mid 30’s slot head, much more accurate and cured the buzzing I had with the old tuners.

Attractive, almost perfect fit, but reverse action of originals...

By

I bought these tuners to replace the originals whose worm screws were shot. On paper the specs looked perfect and they in fact were almost a drop in on the turn of the century (1900) Oak Parlor Guitar I was getting back into playing condition. I did have to enlarge the shaft holes by a hair. Then the fit was fine, including the screw holes.

However, after I strung up the guitar I realized that one must now turn the tuners in the reverse direction of the originals to accomplish tightening or loosening the strings. IF I had looked closely at the worm gear I'd have realized that it goes the opposite direction.

All in all, no biggie & I'm happy with the tuners!

Not all slotted heads need the same 1" peg length.

By

I really do like these tuners. However the Alvarez parlor guitar upon which they were to go had a bigger space than what might be imagined. It seems that most slot-head tuners are about 1" to 1.1" peg length. So, besides checking the peg hole diameter and spacing, do measure original tuners peg length (if a replacement), or measure the length needed. These are 1". My original Wilkinson cheapos were 1.2", and so these were just a smidge too short. I'm hoping to solve the problem with bushings in the center wood.

Product quality is good.
I bought these to finish restoration of an old banjo ukulele that required two tuners per side. Bought this set because is has a simple style with very little ornamentation. I
cut off the third, deburred and installed them. Working like a champ!

These tuners worked great on my pre-war Dobro that I switched over to a square neck slide. I put the tuners on and then I put a set of heavy Dobro strings on and tuned it up to a openG . They work great and no sliped gears. I am happy with them . Thanks for the sale on them stewmac.

I purchased the Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Slotted Peghead - Square End as replacement tuners for my 1934 National Style O and they fit perfectly. No adjusting, drilling or monkeying around, and they even aligned with the screw holes perfectly. Thanks Stew-Mac!

Great response from StewMac customer service on a last minute change in my order. Authentic aging process looks excellent. Works as it should, reasonably priced, compared to buying an actual vintage part on line. Thumbs up for StewMac!
