Golden Age A-style Mandolin Tuners

About This Item

Completely redesigned! Improved tuning for vintage-style mandolins, without giving up the authentic look.

Tired of fighting cantankerous old tuners but don't want to give up the vintage look? We have completely redesigned our Golden Age mandolin tuners! Under the direction of StewMac's Don MacRostie, renowned mandolin maker, we've brought back classic features of tuning machines from the pre-World War II era.

F-style models also available.

The look of the old, the reliability of the new.
The look is more authentic than ever, but close-tolerance specifications, nylon worm bearings, and 15:1 gear ratio make Golden Age tuners smoother and more efficient than vintage machines ever were. Two optional relic finishes duplicate that "well-played" patina that makes most other modern tuners look johnny-come-lately on a vintage or reproduction instrument. The distinctive Loar-shape steel baseplates even have the same footprint and engraving as 1920s originals.

The details are 1920s too:
Old-style string post shape
Square worm supports
Straight-slot worm gear screws
Roundhead straight-slot mounting screws
Vintage-shape black or ivoroid knobs

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Press-fit peghead bushings
• Mounting screws

Gear ratio15:1
String post diameter0.236" (6mm)
String post spacing29/32" standard (23mm)
Required peghole diameter.336" (8.53mm)

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the #2061 Bushing Reamer (.328" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

These Work Great

By

These were sent to me as a warranty replacement for the tuners on my 2012 Collings MT. The original ones were always difficult to turn and were getting worse. These new ones are fantastic, and they made my MT perfect! But now I no longer have an excuse to play out of tune :)

Better than originals...I'll give them a "B"

I replaced the original tuners on my 1916 Gibson A. The switchout was easy, and was I able to re-use all but one bushing. I used the original screws because the threads on the new ones were finer. My "A" now stays in tune, but tuning itself is not as smooth as I would have expected, but perhaps that's normal for open tuners.

They've got the look and function that you need to restore playability the vintage instruments. They greatly improve cheap new instruments as well.

Sovereign Mandolin rebuild

I recently decided to drag my Fathers old Mandolin out of the attic. Stored away in closets and attics for decades it was in pretty bad shape. As this is the first time working with any instrument and no musical knowledge your how to videos were very helpful. I used the Golden Age A-style Mandolin Tuners. after installing the peg-head spacers the tuners slid right into place a perfect fit for the older spacing. they match the Golden Age Mandolin Tailpiece perfectly.

The best!

Put these on my Kentucky 174 and 162, both low end instruments. Big improvement in both tone and tuning. Best upgrade ever!!!

Good value, backlash and buttons a miss

Good value, decent feeling machines. Baseplates and worms well fabricated. Bright nickel feels like it's galling under tension, and significant backlash to some gears. Knobs look cheap.
I prefer the feel of the "relic" version.
