Waverly Banjo Tuning Pegs

About This Item

Inspired by the unique pegs used on prewar Gibson Florentine, Bella Voce and Granada banjos, and Martin OM guitars in the '20s and '30s.

Waverly's distinctive machined brass "2-Band" offset gear case and grained ivoroid knob will bring a handsome vintage touch to your banjo.

The best of vintage design and modern craftsmanship.
Smoother than the originals, thanks to 4:1 planetary gears, sealed lubrication, low-friction bushings, internal tension spring, leather knob washer and adjustable knob tension.

The brass string post has the original taper for proper string angle over the nut. The threaded hex bushing has a tapered washer to help protect the peghead finish.

For 7/16" to 3/4" (11.11mm x 19.05mm) peghead thickness. 3/8"-dia. pegholes required.

"Waverlys are smooth, accurate, and dependable."
—Sammy Shelor, The Lonesome River Band

"Very efficient and smooth banjo pegs. I highly recommend them."
—Tony Trischka

The tuners feel really nice once on, they are easy to install, and they look great. One was problematic when I put it on, but Stewmac replaced it instantly. Happy !

Good news bad news

Good news: These Waverly tuners are beautiful and smooth as silk.
Bad news: I bought a set of four, and one was defective. (That's 25% failure rate).
Good news: I called StewMac and they agreed to replace the defective one and ship it out FedEx so I could have it in time for my next rehearsal.
Bad news: They didn't. It did come, but three days later.
Good news: All in all, I'm very satisfied with the outcome. But one star off for the quality control issue.

Replaced 2:1 tuners with these 4:1 tuners

By

I had an antique tenor banjo someone had installed 2:1 tuners on. Tuning was difficult because very minor adjustments to the knobs made excessive shifts in pitch. Also, unless the screw-tension adjustment was maintained at an excessively exact setting (loosening with use, requiring frequent adjustment), the tuners were uncomfortably stiff, or the tuner would spin down the string, going flat. Hideous.
The new tuners are beautiful, easy to tune, and they hold pitch, even if the screw-adjusted tension on the tuner gets a little loose. It's a whole new banjo.
Easy to install. Easy to adjust. Nothing but great things to say about these tuners.

Great pegs but were you expecting "Planetary"?

By

Looking at the picture at this angle, imo makes it a little difficult to see that they are different than the FiveStar, truly Planetary pegs which are narrower, shorter bodied and symmetric. These Waverlys, great pegs, have an offset knob, and the wider body may not look as well nor fit your peghead back as well. Yet the blurb says they are planetary, and Stew-Mac (also great guys) are sticking to this story. So I'm giving them just 4 stars. Look at two pix, the first shows an offset, 2 band tuner with no planets, just ring and star and the second which shows the guts of a planet. But both tuners work great, don't know which will last longer, so comes down to the style you prefer. I do have a set of 1927 Planets which has worn guts, unreliable, so maybe if you're planning on playing longer than maybe 80 years this should be considered.

Very nice tuners, quick delivery

I bought the Waverly banjo tuners to replace the old tuners on a 1925 Gibson. The old ones were just not reliable any more. I did have to enlarge the holes to 3/8 inch to make the new ones fit, but they have given new (and tuneful) life to a fine old instrument. The Waverlys tuner are very smooth, hold pitch, and look great!

Replaced some 30 year old tuners on my Gibson TB-250 tenor banjo and now it stays in tune. Great quality and they look old like my banjo.
