Economy A-style Mandolin Tuners

About This Item

Ideal tuners for fixing up those not so valuable, but dearly loved instruments.

14:1 ratio with white plastic knobs. Nickel-plated.

29/32" (23.02mm) string post spacing.
5/16" (7.94mm) diameter pegholes required.

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Press-fit bushings
• Mounting screws

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the Standard Peghole Reamer to cut smooth, perfectly round holes.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1712 Depth-stop Drill Bit (5/64" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

nice tuners for the price, but, not for a bowlback mandolin...

I liked the sound of "economy" tuners for this bowlback mandolin I was rehabbing. I understand they are listed as for A-style mandolins, but I guess I would have liked a warning in the description that they will have to be installed "reverse tuning" for a bowlback. They lined up fine, were well made for the price and looked nice. The originals I took off this mandolin (and also on my other bowlback mandolin I own) when installed have the worm gear UNDER the tuning post gear. The other 4 mandolins I have in house at the moment (A styles and a banjo mandolin...not bowlbacks) have the worm gear OVER the tuning post gear. It was not possible to install them the other way around(flip them LEFT for RIGHT) because then the backing plate sticks up well above the headstock of a bowl back. Just wanted to bring to your attention that these don't work conventionally in bowlback mandolins apparently. I'm not a mandolin expert by any stretch, so a heads up would have been nice...I left them installed because I already had more into this inexpensive mandolin in parts than it was worth, and so now it tunes backwards...not that big a deal in that it was a present for a friend. I'm sure pro luthiers already know what I just found out about tuners in different types of mandolins. Thanks for listening.

The tunner that I purchased from Stu Mac had one unit that had one defective part which was replaced very quickly with one telephone call. Thank you for the quick service.

Grovers are the best but I use these on mandolins I buy at yard sales.I have no problem if you use Stewmac jig to install them.

Get the job done!

These tunners are decent and just what I expected as a cheap replacement for a cheap fender mando, they dropped right into place. The only disappointment was the very cheap feeling plastic buttons. I mean for 20 bucks I didn't expect something amazing, but was hoping for a little better than they are.

Good but not perfect

By

And it's not about this mandolin tuners but the mandoline head. Original mandolin tuners had a 115 mm long and this mandolin tuner it is not large enough. I had to use a drill to enlarge a hole but, at last, it seems to fit.

Unfortunately I lost a part of the mandolin and I have couldnt try it...

In other hand, I am really happy to find your page because, here in Monterrey, is really dificult to find pieces to fix a mandolin and I have had to use jewelry tools instead of use luthier's tool. Now, I know where to find it.

Better than I expected

I put a set on a 38 Kalamazoo A-type. Fit perfectly, though I had to do new screw holes.

They work better than the price would suggest. Wish I had done it long ago.
