Elite Banjo Heads

About This Item

The look of calfskin, without shrinkage.
Original Elite head has bonded textured surface and a deep warm sound.

Elite banjo heads feature a modern material with the feel and appearance of calfskin, for a warm old-time sound. They're a popular and practical alternative: no shrinkage or stretching due to humidity.

11" high crown.

Choosing the right size banjo head
Measure your banjo for the correct head diameter
Your banjo's rim may be slightly out of round, so take at least three diameter measurements at different points on the outside of the banjo's tone ring or rim top. Use the average diameter to the nearest 1/16" to order the correct size.

Most modern banjos use an 11"-diameter head. Modern makers of "old-time" open-back banjos usually use 11" (and sometimes 12") heads. Vintage banjos, however, may have a range of rim diameters from 10" to 12".

Choose the correct crown height
Crown height is the vertical distance from the top of the head's mounting band to the top surface of the head. A banjo with a flathead tone ring (or a flat-topped banjo) requires a medium or high crown head. A banjo with an archtop tone ring requires a low crown head. The correct crown height prevents the banjo's tension hoop from pulling down too far, and ensures the hoop won't be so high as to impede the strings.

Fits and sound great! Doesn't stretch in the hot stage lights like the original clear head. Thank you!

I can't comment on the tone since the banjo that I'm working on doesn't have the neck attached yet, but it looks really nice. However, it fit really snug. Tight enough that it was a small struggle to fit it over the Whyte Laydie tone ring. Snug is fine I guess, just never had a head that fit that tightly.

Good Replacement

Someone tossed an old Kay 4 string banjo that was pretty beat and missing parts. The head was water-damaged so I started from scratch, repainted the body and cleaned up most of the parts. The first thing I reinstalled is the head. It isn't as tight as I'd like so I'll need to adjust it, but -if nothing else- it will make a nice artistic accent to my basement recording studio. This head looks aged and it is perfect for a refurbished instrument.

Unfortunately over the years I've found the High Crown (not just elite, but remo also) is not as high as it used to be, more like a medium, so the hoop sits higher than I'd like. I wish they'd make the logo smaller, to fit under the tailpiece.

Very nice quality head. Unfortunately the rim is wider than my original and the bracket hooks will not fit around the rim to attach to the rim of the tension hoop!

Wasn't overly happy with the tone from the Remo Renaissance Head that came with my openback banjo as I wanted a more of a mellow, "thunky", "old time sound"...don't ask me just what exactly that sound is... but I know it when I hear it. Anyhow, I tried a Remo Fiberskyn head which was a slight improvement...getting closer. So, I once again switched to this Elite head. Although not perfect, it is the best so far. Now my banjo has a much more mellow sound without the "twang" that oftentimes is present in a bluegrass-type resonator banjo and even some openbacks.
