Waverly Guitar Tuners with Butterbean Knobs for Solid Pegheads

About This Item

The choice of renowned guitarmakers for their finest instruments.
"They hold their tune and look superb…of course I recommend Waverly."—Dick Boak, Martin Guitars

With Waverly tuners, your guitar plays in tune and stays in tune. Their acclaimed design, precise 16:1 gear ratio, long-life stainless steel/bronze construction, and smooth, reliable operation have made them the favorite of renowned guitarmakers and musicians for their finest instruments.

Waverly tuners offer modern precision with vintage style. Try our relic nickel finish, an antique look for vintage and reproduction guitars.

Martin, Gibson, Collings, Santa Cruz, Huss & Dalton, Sams, Bourgeois and other guitarmakers specify Waverly tuners for their top-line instruments.

Why do the pros choose Waverly tuners?

Smoother, more efficient tuning.
Waverly's renowned gear mechanism is second to none. Waverly tuners feature a proven, precisely machined design ensuring accurate, efficient gear alignment. Nylon worm gear bushings enhance the smooth feel. The result: looseness is eliminated—your guitar plays in tune and stays in tune.

Longer life with less wear.
Waverly's stainless steel worm gear and machined bronze alloy string post gear are more durable than the brass gears used in other tuners.

Vintage details.
The look is right at home on vintage-style instruments. Authentic "Butterbean" knobs (a description coined by the late Martin historian Mike Longworth) are solid brass, not die-cast, with the historically-correct shape not found on other modern tuners.
  • Set of 6: 3-left/3-right
  • Mounting screws and bushings included
The sturdy steel baseplates have the authentic 1930s footprint. String posts are vintage-style tapered 1/4"-diameter brass, with press-fit knurled brass hex bushings to fit 11/32"-diameter pegholes. Slot-head mounting screws complete the vintage look; there are no additional holes to drill on many older Martins and Gibsons.

The cure for sweet old guitars with cranky old tuners!
Waverly Relics make your vintage or reproduction instrument look and tune as good as it sounds. The special relic nickel finish has that authentic "played for 80 years" patina that makes shiny new tuners look out of place on a fine old guitar.

Installation Tips

Bushings: Get the right fit! Use our slow-speed #2062 Bushing Reamer (.340" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1712 Depth-stop Drill Bit (5/64" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Conversion peghead bushings are also available for retrofitting Waverly tuners into larger Gotoh, Grover or Schaller pegholes, without doweling and redrilling. A Stewart-MacDonald exclusive!

My 1971 Martin D-28 looks even more Vintage- with Relic Nickel Waverly Butterbean Tuners

By

Verified Buyer

I am thrilled with the Vintage "look" and "easy tuning action" of my new Waverly Relic Nickel open-gear Butterbean knob tuners on my 48 year old 1971 Martin D-28. I replaced the original closed gear Grover tuners that came on my Martin with the Waverly "Nickel Relics". They make my Martin look even more Vintage than its 48 years. I knew beforehand that the tuner conversion on the headstock of my 1971 Martin would need the 3/8" Conversion Bushings, so a set of 6 was simply added to my order. I needed to do some ever-so-slight reaming of the six holes left from the larger diameter closed head Grovers for the 3/8" bushings to precisely fit. I used a regular 3/8" round file to do the job. Then, along with a C-Clamp vice-grips I was easily able to set in the new relic nickel Conversion Bushings. Since the original Grovers had one screw hole that lined up perfectly with the new Waverlys, only 6 screw holes needed to be pre-drilled.
NOTE: You only need to pre-drill each hole a tad shy of 1/4" deep, taking into account the 1/8" thickness of the tuners bottom plate and the flat-head screw being just 3/8" long. Since each Waverly open gear tuner is only held in place by two 3/8" screws, you'll want some undrilled wood left down in each pre-drilled screw hole so the screws can really bite down securely into the headstock and tighten each flat-head screw really well into the tuner's bottom plate at the time of final installation.
Be sure to line-up each open gear tuner to mark the second screw hole for final installation of the 6 tuners.
Love the more vintage- look of my 1971 Martin D-28 with its new relic nickel Waverly tuners

Perfect fit and upgrade

By

Verified Buyer

I just upgraded my 2013 Martin HD-28e Retro from the original stock tuners (stamped Martin & Co) to these Waverly tuners. It was a perfect fit, no need to change the original bushings, no modification needed whatsoever. Really easy to do, so I did it myself. I even used the original screws, which I think look nicer than the slotted screws ( more authentic) that came with the Waverlies. If you have a Martin 2012 or 2013 it is a really nice and worth upgrade. After 2014 Martin upgraded from factory to Grovers and in 2018 to Schallers, in those cases the decision is not as evident as it was for me.

Pefect fit

I just installed these on my Martin 000-15M after one of the original tuners broke. The new ones fit perfectly. The screw holes lined up perfectly. I didn't even have to change the bushings because they fit the new tuners perfectly.

Stew Mac stood tall on these. I bought a set of these tuners a few years ago and the finish started to wear off. Sent some pictures of the tuners and they sent a fresh set to replace them. Four stars to reflect the original tuners finish issue but 5 stars ++ for customer service from Stew Mac !!
