Golden Age Restoration Tuners for 12-String Slotted Peghead Guitar

About This Item

At last! Quality authentic style machines for slotted-peghead Martin, Stella, and similar 12-string guitars.

Their simple open-gear 6-on-plate design will improve tuning without adding significant weight to the peghead. Relic nickel finish adds an authentic look to vintage and reproduction instruments. Complete set for 12-string slotted peghead.

"For 20 years we've been dying for someone to manufacture tuners like these. People who build replica instruments or who do any restoration or repair work are just going to love these. Absolutely terrific, StewMac!"
— Frank Ford, Gryphon Stringed Instruments, Palo Alto CA

"Guys like me have waited a long time for these, and they're a dream come true. They're great — nice and tight, with a good gear ratio, and they allow me to keep the old-style spacing so I can have a headstock of the same dimensions as the originals."
— Todd Cambio, Fraulini Guitars
  • Rectangular steel baseplates with vintage-style square riveted worm supports
  • Steel string posts for slotted pegheads
  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Original-shape cream or black plastic knobs; relic tuners have knobs with a matte finish
  • .922" (23.42mm) string post spacing
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Mounting screws included
Note: Mounting screw spacing on original 12-string tuners varied widely.

Installation Tips

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

These well made tuners were a perfect fit to bring new life to my '68 Harmony Sovereign 12 String. The fit was precise and no modifications had to be made. Just off with the old and on with the new.

Great quality and fit for my 1970 Martin D-1220

I'll have to admit, I was worried. I had the pearl tuners with antique bronze originally. Lost one gear and could not find a replacement for it anywhere.
These fit perfectly. Took about 5 minutes to replace them. Smaller tuner heads than the pearls, so they're easier to access when changing strings, tuning, etc. Great vintage look.
Good substitute when you can't find the originals. Excellent quality and great service.

Golden Age Tuners for 12-string guitar

My son asked if I could install new tuners on his ‘49 Martin A-style mandolin. He brought with him some new tuners that didn’t quite fit. After some research, I learned that tuners for older Martins had an odd (.922) spacing and were no longer made. I also learned that you can’t force the close- fitting (29/32”), tuners that are currently made into the old Martin peg head. And, I learned further that these “Golden Age Tuners for 12-string guitar” had the (.922) spacing that I needed. So I ordered them.

When I received them I, of course, I had to cut off 2 tuners from each side. I did this with a child’s hacksaw that I found in Lowe’s. It had the very narrow metal-cutting blade I needed in order to preserve the screw hole on the end of the now 4-tuner strip. The tuners were of the proper spacing, but I had to slightly widen them since the new tuners were slightly wider than the old ones. This I achieved with a drill bit I turned by hand. The screw holes on the new tuners aligned with those on the Martin.

Lastly, the new tuners came without bushings for the top of the peg head and the old bushings would not fit over the new tuners. It turned out that the 6 mm bushings that came with set of tuners my son brought did fit. Worked perfectly. Mandolin restored!

It should be noted that I am a wood worker, not a luthier. I can’t play a note. My son is a professional musician.

What a difference!

I just picked up a 1971 D12-21 after hearing a friend play his. This one has issues. The seller said it needed a neck reset. They didn't say the tuners were shot. A tech suggested a compression refret which did the trick on the action. I just installed the new StewMac tuning machines, restrung with Cleartone 10-47s, stretched them and brought her up to tune. Aside from minor tuning, she has been rock solid since. Nice product, easy to install, screw holes even line up fine.

New Life for a Great Guitar

I acquired an 80s-era Martin D-12-35 10 years ago. It was a wonderful guitar, in pristine condition with a beautiful bell-like crystalline sound. Problem was: it took an eternity to get in tune and then wouldn’t stay there. The original tuners were completely worn out. I tried to live with it for 10 years, not really wanting to replace the original tuners or finding any replacements that I liked or looked good on the guitar. Finally, I decided I’d sell the guitar, but, before I did, I thought I’d look one more time for replacement tuners. I found and bought these. They fit perfectly and looked like they belonged on the guitar. I didn’t even have to drill new screw holes. The result was this wondrous guitar is easy to tune and stays in tune with the best of them. It’s easy to dial into a note with pin-point accuracy. It’s not overstating it to say these tuners allowed this guitar to come into its own. After playing guitar for 35 years, I can say this is the best money I’ve ever spent for a guitar accessory or upgrade. I’d unconditionally recommend these to anyone.

A Tremendous Improvement!

By

I used this set to replace the original tuners on a late '60s Silvertone (Harmony Stella) 12-string. Excellent fit. The new tuners use far fewer screws to attach the units to the peghead than the original set did, but the screw holes lined up just fine. I'm liking the improved gear ratio and the lack of old-tuner-sloppiness!

I am using them in a special Brazilian Viola with 12 strings (instead of the traditional 10 strings). They have good quality and math very well the instrument country style.
