Nut and Saddle Vise

About This Item

A better way to hold nuts and saddles for easier, faster shaping.

Sure, most of us already have a shop vise. And for a long time, you've probably used yours to hold nuts and saddles for filing and shaping. But you've also noticed that your vise jaws get in the way when you're trying to file the top of that nut or saddle, so you're constantly repositioning the work in the jaws.

We considered the problem and designed a special vise that gives you the clearance you need for an easier and more efficient job.

The custom jaws are extra tall, with steep angles for easier access to your work. The end of the vise is beveled for extra relief, too. The 2"-wide steel jaws are hardened for durability and specially undercut to stay parallel under pressure, holding the nut or saddle uniformly without slippage.

For other jobs, the jaws open to 2-7/16", making it versatile for gripping all kinds of small work. This is a well-made, heavy little portable steel vise with a 2" x 5-5/8" footprint; you can clamp it to the edge of your workbench, or into your larger shop vise.

The Nut and Saddle Vise is included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Should have bought it long ago. Finally took the chance and i'm glad i bought this handsome little fella.

It does the job right out of the box but i felt it can be improved though. So i disassembled all the parts and found paint build up at one of the feet of the movable jaw base. Scraped it and lap a few light strokes with a coarse&fine diamond stone. I also stroked the stone at the rails to knock off a few high casting spots. Then I changed the phillips screw to nylon screw (had to modify the nylon screw a bit) and after putting a little grease here and there, it's much smoother now. No drag, almost silent and i can even turn the handle with my pinky effortlessly.

Pls be advised that if you don't know what you're doing, you might ruin your vise instead.

A good product. Very solid.

Very useful, but misaligned

Very useful for making guitar nuts and saddles, and also for other small work that needs a tight grip. The weight is almost always enough so that it doesn't need to be clamped/screwed down (but I wish there was a more obvious way to do that when necessary). The jaws are not perfectly aligned either along the top or the sides, which is confusing to me. Mostly I can do stuff anyway, but it would be a much better tool if the sides matched more equally.

Nut and Saddle Vise

I'm giving it four stars because there is no convenient way to mount it to a work surface. Also, the jays on mine were slightly off - one is a tad taller than the other. It doesn't affect the usability, but this is a tool to make precision nuts and the tool itself is not that precise.
