ColorTone Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

ColorTone is specially formulated for the needs of stringed instruments. It's a hard, durable finish that's more flexible than standard furniture lacquer, allowing for the natural expansion and contraction that occurs when a guitar is exposed to humidity and temperature changes.

ColorTone Lacquer is ready to spray with no thinning required, for faster finish build-up in multiple coats.

Traditional Aged is a clear lacquer that has a very slight amber cast and over time it will develop a traditional, warm vintage look on your instrument. It is the ideal choice for touching up a vintage guitar. Available in Gloss or Satin.

Modern Clear lacquer creates an ultra clear finish without altering or dimming the color of your instrument, perfect for preserving the natural or stained color of tonewoods. This finish will not age and yellow at the same rate as our Traditional Aged lacquer, meaning it will stay water clear much longer. Available in Gloss or Satin.

"I find the Modern Clear will reinforce or even enhance the purple/blue hues of Indian Rosewood, whereas the Traditional Aged Clear will tone down the purples and give the instrument a warmer, slightly amber color."
—Todd Sams, StewMac R+D Supervisor and builder of Sams Guitars

ColorTone Lacquer works best when applied over ColorTone Vinyl Sealer, ensuring maximum flexibility and a more even build when spraying.

1-quart can.

One can goes a long way! One quart will finish:
1 acoustic guitar body and neck
2 entire mandolins
2 to 3 solid guitar or bass bodies
3 to 5 electric guitar or bass necks
4 ukuleles
2 to 3 dulcimers
2 to 3 banjo rims and necks

Keep in mind there are many application variables: your spray gun adjustments, PSI used, how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

Lacquer products are flammable! They cannot be shipped outside the USA nor shipped by air within the USA. Nitrocellulose lacquer products should not be used with acrylic lacquers.

Great Look

By

Verified Buyer

I have found that the aged satin is the perfect look for my guitars. It has just a small amount of amber in the mix and just takes the edge off of the bare wood. I spray it thinned out slightly with retarder-thinner, that seems to work best with my equipment.

Different, a first impression

Perhaps after adapting to this new paradigm it will become my favorite but as yet I miss the old standard.

My preferred Brand

I have used the different brands from Stew Mac and find ColorTone seems to flow and spray more evenly than the others. This is my preferred brand.

Pretty much what you expect in a quality lacquer but now in an intelligent bottle for occasional use

I really appreciate being able to mix my own lacquer using this stuff, which seems like great lacquer. But even more, selling in these easy to handle, no mess metal bottles is genius. No waste, no drips and really easy to accurately handle. Thank you!
