ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

The easiest way to spray a professional finish!
Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sealers, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

ColorTone® Sealers have a high solids content for quickly building a finish and provide excellent adhesion for lacquer topcoats. They're are flexible and compatible with many different finish types. We recommend Vinyl Sealer as the perfect all around sealer that works well for any project. It's moisture-resistant and works for opaque, translucent, and metallic finishes, as well as refinishing projects and oily woods.

For spraying a transparent finish on new wood, many use Sanding Sealer as a base, followed with ColorTone lacquer.

Some builders will spray a coat of White Vinyl Sealer to create an opaque undercoat for a metallic or solid color finish.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

How many cans do you need?

  • Electric guitar neck: No sealer, 2 to 3 cans lacquer
  • Solid body electric: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Acoustic or archtop guitar: 1 can sealer, 4 to 6 cans lacquer
  • Mandolin or dulcimer: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Banjo rim and neck: 1 can sealer, 3 to 4 cans lacquer
  • Ukulele: 1 can sealer, 2 to 3 cans lacquer

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

Clear Satin typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips

We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

This product is great ! As long as you use the suggestions they giveyou from StewMac you will get a finish as good as a spray gun without all the expensive equipment. I did a tobacco sunburst that looked as good as a pro job.

How to get a great finish

I've used these products on a couple of guitars and the results have been spectacular. Its a lot of work to get there but well worth it.
I'm working on a Gabon ebony OM. This time I think I'll use a bit more than 1 can of sealer. So the grain is filled in more.

easy to use - goes quick

Overall I'm happy. The suggestion to warm the lacquer in a bowl of warm water was probably a good idea but that caused the paper label to literally fall apart - leaving me with a gooey, glue covered spray can with no label?? It went on easy enough but I was surprised at how quickly I ran out. Granted, I'm new to this product, but not new to spraying things.
Would I buy it again? I don't know. I needed nitrocellulose lacquer for this specific guitar. I'd probably shy away from it in the future because this was overpriced - IMHO. I ended up running out and had to order two more cans - still waiting for delivery. My small shop is tied up completely until I get this thing out of here now.
