Instructions
ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

repair friendly

I use only water-base finishing but had a repair to do that required nitro. This product is very convenient for this type of repair and worked well.

Easy to use nitrocellulose spray can lacquer

When I purchased and acquired the Stewmac nitro clear gloss spray cans, they were easier to use than I thought. Just follow the instructions in any Stewmac literature and you won't have any problems at all with it all. Whether spraying and building up single coats and suggested double coats, it is easy to use and turns out with a good coverage. At first I was afraid that it would be hard to scuff out the orange rind texture buildup, but with the multiple grits of sandpaper to apply to it, it was not a problem at all. Hence that is another new story to come up...

Easy to use great looking finish

First time I've ever used a lacquer finish. Very easy to use, not a lot of sanding between coats like with Polyurethane finish. Drys in a couple of hours and then is ready for another coat. It polished up great and had a wonderful feel to it when all was said and done.

spray cans kick butt!

I've been purchasing tons of guitar related tools from Stu-Mac, since they were mostly a Banjo parts company (forever). Since they have been handling great guitar-related stuff, they rock. The Nitro in cans really saves time. Instead of setting up my spray unit, I just use the canned nitro and its Great. Heat the can in some hot water and go! The colored cans for cherry and brown are the best, You rock Stu-Mac (shipping get a little expensive, and the $30 Min is a bit bogus) Pic is me and Glen Campbell's 12 string! Just refretted it.

Nice 'n Easy

I recently had a Stratocaster maple neck & fingerboard made to my specifications. I gave it a dark tint & used the Nitrocellulose lacquer from Stewmac for a shiny gloss finish. I followed the instructions and everything turned out just fine. For the final shine I just used some polish. I plan on trying the same lacquer on a guitar body on my next project.

Excellent product for the price...

Easy to use, and high quality finish, but nozzles work much better if the can is kept warm...

StewMac Lacquer

Certainly a refinish project is a labor of love. You may be a month or more on your refinish project. Every Flaw, scratch and blemish should be sanded smooth and as near perfect as you can get it. This guitar was a beat-up squire affinity body, and it required a lot of sanding. I installed the binding during the sanding process. But finishing with Stew Mac Lacquer, the project was pretty simple. Warm the can in hot water before use. Use a Tack Rag just seconds before spraying on your first coat of lacquer, and then, spray on a thin coat of lacquer every two hours, until you have 6 coats. Personally, I use a "Cake Boss" turn-table/lazy Susan and spray one side of the guitar at a time. You'll have less chance of runs as opposed to hanging the guitar vertically, on a wire, and trying to do both sides at once. Don't get in a hurry, and Inspect your work, every step of the way. As you can see, I had a nice high gloss finish when it was done, and I have not buffed or polished it yet. But I do have to stress that the success of your project depends on how well the guitar body looks BEFORE applying your finish. I used Stew Mac Finishing Papers and finishing supplies, (contact their tech support if you have any questions about your project), and you'll have a project that you'll be proud to own, that will simply amaze your friends. People look at this guitar, and look back at me and say "Ain't No Way"... "Yep, - just me and StewMac!"

StewMac nitro aerosol guitar lacquer

I rate this product as excellent, as far as lacquer goes.( I prefer French Polish). Nothing is perfect but this guitar lacquer performs as lacquer should. It is fairly forgiving if you follow the basic rules of painting. The problems I encountered were (1) the spray pattern on the nozzles were not consistent in width (2) out of 10 cans two of the spray nozzles were laying inside the cap and wouldn't go back on. StewMac immediately sent me two new cans no charge. I lost three or four days waiting for the new cans to arrive but as I stated in the beginning "nothing is perfect". Overall I find StewMac an excellent company and plan to continue to be a loyal customer!
