Diamond fret files are the best way to recrown your frets! Unlike traditional fret files, diamond files cut in both directions, they don't chatter or leave chatter marks, and the fret is smoother after crowning. These files are being used by repair shops and major manufacturers all around the world.

Our diamond fret files have concave cutting edges, one for medium and one for wide fretwire. Each edge is electro-coated with micro industrial diamonds. These super-tough abrasive surfaces round the frets more smoothly than standard toothed files, for cleaner filing without chatter marks. Because the diamond particles cut on the forward and backward strokes, you get better control over your work and the job goes much faster.

We offer three designs of diamond fret crowning files, each in two different grits. Diamond fret files are available in the traditional Diamond Fret File, the curved Offset Diamond Fret File, and the unique Dual-grit Diamond Fret File.

What grit do I need? If you're just starting out in fretting, we recommend the 300-grit files, as they don't remove too much material too soon — a mistake that many beginning fretters make. Even a professional will find the 300-grit file allows them to quickly get the fret properly crowned after only a few strokes.

Use the 150-grit when you need to mill-off lots of material in a hurry.

Stainless fretwire and fretting tools
While stainless steel fretwire is definitely harder than the traditional nickel-silver, stainless wire does not cause premature wear of our files, cutters, and abrasives. All of our fretting tools are suitable for use on stainless steel wire except for the Fret Tang Nippers.

Very good tool

The first time I leveled my frets I recoiled in horror at the flattened mess I made and I knew re-dressing them with a 3 edge file was going to take hours. I bought this tool last year and dressing is a snap. Even when I have to be aggressive with metal removing to get level frets, this tool quickly restores a perfect shape. i wish it were a bit longer and I wish the 2 radii were marked on the tool for fast reference...but other than those petty complaints, this is a must have tool.

Great Tool (but learn how to use with Stainless Frets)

If you slow down and ease up the pressure it will last alot longer on stainless frets - otherwise you'll wear the diamonds right off of it! No problem on regular nickel-steel frets though.

Gets it going in no time!

Simple, this fret crowning file shaves metal quickly and also working time...fret work goes quick with this thing!! I started using it, but with time, i've become a triangle file lover...i use them both on my fretworks for the ultimate rounded fret top!!

My favorite file

The best thing about this file is that you can file in both directions. Leaving only 300 grit scratches behind which are easy to sand out. Definitely high quality.

Excellent Crowning File

I've used the 300 grit for years. It's way smoother than a traditional crowning file making further polishing steps go that much quicker. The only option I would wish for would be different widths, it can be a little squarish on the tops of smaller frets. Otherwise a pleasure to use.

Fantastic Fret File

The 300 grit file arrived within days from StewMac. USA to Auckland, New Zealand in blistering time! I have recrowned 2 fret boards now and I'm very pleased with the result. This file is a serious item for the tool box. I got the fretwork book too. It has lots of handy hints and secrets. Great for a beginner like me. Thanks StewMac!
