Essentials are there.

I bought this for my first ever fret/refret job. In spite of my inexperience, between the book, tools, and some online Erlewine videos, I ended up with a professional looking, well playing fret job. The other tools I made to complete the fret work are a maple caul to press and set the frets down tight after hammering, and a radius block to level sand and clean up the fret board.

so good

Had 3 guitars that needed fret jobs. The kit, customs and shipment was half the price of a job done by my lokal dealer. It took about 2 hours pr. guitar, but the feeling of being able to do this myself is priceless, and I still have the kit.

Great Kit

This is a great kit, because you will use most of these tools for things other than fretting. So even if you only occasionally do fret work these tools will still be useful.

Great System

I tried some of the "cheapies" that claim to be as good as StewMac. Trust me, they're not. That old line, "you're only as good as the tools you use" ain't no old line, it's true. P A Boyer

Needs more tools!

5 stars for what you get. My only complaint is I think you really need fret bending pliers (1696) or something to bend the fretwire to the radius of the fretboard. I consider that "essential."
Also the book is ok but the DVD (Fret Basics) is much much better. The DVD really shows you how to do everything step-by-step, which, ironically, the book doesn't do. I highly recommend the fret basics dvd along with this!
Lastly, you'll need at least one radius block to sand the frets with after leveling them. I consider that basic.
The fret rocker is very cool and I am sure I will get a lot of use out of it, but I would've preferred to have fret bending pliers or radius blocks instead, and buy the fret rocker later. Anyway, you can't go wrong with this kit, I'd just add the above things to it.

First Time Fretting

The Essential Fretting Kit is a very good set of learning tools for someone like myself who has never installed frets before. The book that comes with it is helpful in learning to deal with different circumstances, especially about working around binding since I mostly work with banjos.
