Instructions
This convenient handheld tool was developed by Todd Sams here in our shop, and works with most major brands of guitar and mandolin tuning machines.

Best of all, it removes the bushings too! Even stubborn bushings in counterbored pegholes can be removed easily and without damage, thanks to an adjustable expanding pin that grips the bushing from the inside.

Minimize the finish damage usually caused when extracting a bushing: Choose the hole in the 3-hole clear bushing caul that matches the bushing (each hole is different, so you can get a close fit). Lay it between the clear sleeve of the Bushing Press and the peghead. The caul will hold down the finish while the bushing is being pressed out.

Included with the Tuner Bushing Press:
  • Brass pin for bushing installation
  • Expanding brass pin for bushing removal
  • 3-hole clear bushing caul
  • Allen wrench

It Works, but!!

I have removed and installed two sets of bushings with this tool, and it worked as advertised, but the anvil and ram flop around a lot, which makes proper placement slow and aggravating sometimes. I suppose with more usage it would become easier.

Also, some bushings hang up in the plastic protection cover, which then needs to be removed to retrieve the bushing. But, it does remove the anxiety of driving out the bushing with a hammer and drift. It seems somewhat overpriced for what you get.

Great Idea!

Wish I would have had these when I replaced my tuners on my Collings mandolin...... I learned a valuable lesson about the right tools for the job in trying it without em. Won't do that again. Thank goodness it was my mandolin.

Did the job for me!

Like one other reviewer here, I cut my losses by investing in one of these to remove and replace a set of F5 tuners. It's true, it can be a little tricky with the loose swiveling component, but it worked on my mando without chipping out.

Felt secure

I bought this tool cause I didn't want to hammer the bushing into my new neck.
With this tool I knew that I wouldn't damage my brand new neck.
I did a good job and it was worth the price in my opinion.
It was also pretty easy to use.

Clumsy and useless

Yet another tool stewmac cheaps out on. The vice grip is too small to start. The rubber overlay that "protects" the peg head ripped on the first use and the plastic that tore thru dented the neck. This tool is just as clumsy as trying to catch the bushing lip with a punch etc. Its a terrible, poorly made, finnicky tool made in the cheapest possible way. I'm getting a little tired of this from stewmac. To many times these tools have been so cheaply done as it worse than trash.

Your better off using a punch and a mallet as at least you wont end up with a huge ring on the peghead from this "tool".

Should sell for $5

Nice but heads swivel around too much.

Great tool and great idea but it's still half baked. The heads on this device swivel around too much requiring that they be held by hand in order to keep them from moving out of place when squeezing. In the future, tighten up the rivets that hold the heads onto the claps.

Great tool.

I almost didn't buy this tool as I figured I could use the principle and make something equivalent (sometimes being both cheap and industrious can be dangerous). However, in the end I decided not to compound the screw-up that put me in the position of needing the tool in the first place (tip - the gold coloring on tuner bushings will buff off)so I ordered both it and new tuner bushings. Now I'm very glad I did. The old bushings came out perfectly with no damage to the Brazilian faceplate.

I suppose no operation like this can ever be totally risk free however, I can't think of a way of making this any safer. The tool fits close around the bushing being removed so the faceplate is supported as much as possible which should minimize chip-out, if there is any. As I said, I had none.

Tuner Bushing Press

This little beauty takes all of the sweat out of removing/replacing bushings in vintage instruments or freshly finished headstocks.

Busted Faceplate

Be VERY careful with this tool. I used it to remove bushings from a Collings dread and it popped out the bushing along with a very large chunk of Brazilian faceplate. Now I have an expensive repair on my hands.
