Weatherking Banjo Head

Read 7 Reviews   |   Write a Review

The original and still popular plastic heads. They solved the problem of stretching and shrinking due to humidity, common to skin heads, giving the instrument a brighter, crisper tone. Epoxy-mounted Mylar® with white top-frosted surface.

Choosing the right size banjo head
Measure your banjo for the correct head diameter
Your banjo's rim may be slightly out of round, so take at least three diameter measurements at different points on the outside of the banjo's tone ring or rim top. Use the average diameter to the nearest 1/16" to order the correct size.

Most modern banjos use an 11"-diameter head. Modern makers of "old-time" open-back banjos usually use 11" (and sometimes 12") heads. Vintage banjos, however, may have a range of rim diameters from 10" to 12".

Choose the correct crown height
Crown height is the vertical distance from the top of the head's mounting band to the top surface of the head. A banjo with a flathead tone ring (or a flat-topped banjo) requires a medium or high crown head. A banjo with an archtop tone ring requires a low crown head. The correct crown height prevents the banjo's tension hoop from pulling down too far, and ensures the hoop won't be so high as to impede the strings.

Good head, funky finish

I was replacing the head on my old Kay open back banjo, which has a smooth finish with frosting on the back. So I was a little surprised when this one had the frosting on the front where playing will wear it off. Took a little getting used to the feel and sound when playing, as I now have a sandpaper hiss when my finger hits the head (with the accompanying drag on my hand). The frosting also makes repositioning the bridge a pain. Quality was top notch, however, and it went on without trauma or drama.

Very pleased with the improvement over my old head. Five stars, overall, since my gripe is personal preference, not product quality.

banjo head

The best that can be bought. A bright
cut but still has a deep low end sound
when used on a Gibson five string.

Banjo parts

Making the banjo was a cinch with parts supplied and service from StewMac. Only the pot was made by me from Australian Eucalypt kiln dried hard wood. Pals and even banjo teacher have remarked on the finish and the tone. Proud to play banjo with The Tanjil River Band.

great product

Needed this for a banjolin, banjo mandolin.

The quality was fine but it was hard to get the correct size since the instrument was not true round and was over 100 years old.

All and all it worked fine and sounded great.
