Nut and Saddle Vise

About This Item

A better way to hold nuts and saddles for easier, faster shaping.

Sure, most of us already have a shop vise. And for a long time, you've probably used yours to hold nuts and saddles for filing and shaping. But you've also noticed that your vise jaws get in the way when you're trying to file the top of that nut or saddle, so you're constantly repositioning the work in the jaws.

We considered the problem and designed a special vise that gives you the clearance you need for an easier and more efficient job.

The custom jaws are extra tall, with steep angles for easier access to your work. The end of the vise is beveled for extra relief, too. The 2"-wide steel jaws are hardened for durability and specially undercut to stay parallel under pressure, holding the nut or saddle uniformly without slippage.

For other jobs, the jaws open to 2-7/16", making it versatile for gripping all kinds of small work. This is a well-made, heavy little portable steel vise with a 2" x 5-5/8" footprint; you can clamp it to the edge of your workbench, or into your larger shop vise.

The Nut and Saddle Vise is included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Good little vise

It is a great little vise for multiple clamping needs. Build quality could be better and final QC needs improvement. The jaws do not line up correctly and the slide binds. After spending some time machining ,adjusting and lubricating the unit , it works very well.

Machined screw holes in the bottom of the vise would be great to secure the unit to a table/fixture.

Not as precise as I'd have hoped

Thins thing is made in Taiwan, so don't expect America precision. But then again, it's not that expensive either.
The jaws don't align perfectly, so at some point I might want to grind them down a bit. I wasn't able to realign them by loosening the screws. As soon as I tightened them again, they were misaligned again. So that's definitely something, they could improve.
On the other hand, the vise does come in handy, and apart from the above problems it works just fine. It can indeed be clamped to a table, given the right clamp, but that's a bit of a compromise, because the clamp tends to get in the way at times. Something more thought-through would have been great here.
Since I'm living in Europe, I won't be sending it back for an exchange, too much hassle, too expensive, and it's still a nice little helper.

Nice heavy small vise at a fair price. Superior to hobby shop vise for the same price.

I use this all the time, for nut and saddle work, and really anything small. Really great to have in the shop. I would call it indispensable at this point.

Nut and Saddle Vise

The past few years since making custom Mountain Dulcimers I have made my nuts and saddles either freehand on the bench or made simple wooden jigs to hold them while slotting and shaping. Finally decided to splurge on this vise and absolutely LOVE IT ! The two sets I have made in the last couple of weeks since getting the vise were not only easier to do, they also came out much better looking and sounding. Would recommend this to anyone that does any work on stringed instruments.

Saves Your Hands and Fingers!!!

This is one of the best purchases I've made lately. This vice is must have for working on nuts or saddles. I usually work on nuts or saddles using vice grips and flat files and it takes a heavy toll on my fingers and hands trying to hold everything in place while filing and shaping. Not to mention the many times things slip out of my hands or the filing job is not even. I use a standard C clamp on a lower side rail of the vise to clamp it to my work bench and I'm then able to work on a nut or saddle keeping both hands on the file. I not only end up with better results but I get done faster as well. Like my Dad always told me, "Use the right tool for the job...always"!

sturdy & well built

I have not used it yet but it is a solid, well built vise. I still need to get a small vise that I can clamp to my work table to hold this vise. This is the only downside of the vise....it has no way to attach it to a table and needs to be held in another vise. This is why I give it only 4 stars

Vice

I really like this small vice. It does what it is supposed to do which is to give you access to those small parts for filing, sanding, polishing etc. My only beef is that it is not drilled out so it can be attached to a bench. It tends to slide around and move. A couple holes drilled in the housing so you could drill or bolt it to the bench would have been a nice touch. I got around this by just jacking the assembly into a bench vice and everything was solid.
