Nut and Saddle Vise

About This Item

A better way to hold nuts and saddles for easier, faster shaping.

Sure, most of us already have a shop vise. And for a long time, you've probably used yours to hold nuts and saddles for filing and shaping. But you've also noticed that your vise jaws get in the way when you're trying to file the top of that nut or saddle, so you're constantly repositioning the work in the jaws.

We considered the problem and designed a special vise that gives you the clearance you need for an easier and more efficient job.

The custom jaws are extra tall, with steep angles for easier access to your work. The end of the vise is beveled for extra relief, too. The 2"-wide steel jaws are hardened for durability and specially undercut to stay parallel under pressure, holding the nut or saddle uniformly without slippage.

For other jobs, the jaws open to 2-7/16", making it versatile for gripping all kinds of small work. This is a well-made, heavy little portable steel vise with a 2" x 5-5/8" footprint; you can clamp it to the edge of your workbench, or into your larger shop vise.

The Nut and Saddle Vise is included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Great vise for small detail work

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I really like this little vise so far.

I resisted buying it for quite a while, sticking with my cheapo vise from Amazon, or holding small parts in locking pliers. I was a bit worried when I unpacked it - the packaging has all the trappings of the cheap Chinese stuff - generic cardboard box, and heavy metal vise covered in oil. Don't worry - the vise itself is fine quality - we're not talking Swiss precision here, but above average construction with nice, straight jaws.

The screw mechanism feels firm and there's no wobbling. The tall, thin design of the jaws holds small parts perfectly. You can work on parts from all sides, no problems with files or saws hitting the jaws. I haven't actually used it for nut making yet, but I've used it to hold stainless frets while undercutting the tang with a file, used it to trim bolts, clean up saddles, and hold a bunch of other small parts that are usually a pain in the butt.

I don't think it needs mounting holes. It's heavy enough to stay in place while filing small parts, and it's the kind of tool i want to move around while working on small parts.

Does the job, but needs adjustment first

I loosened the allen screws, set the jaw alignment correctly and re-tightened. At that point it was nearly what I wanted. To finish off, I filed the top of the jaws to remove rough grinding tool marks. Overall, I spent a 30min to put this right, and now it is good.

Great little vise Vise

An excellent well engineered precision piece of kit. Does exactly what is meant to do, holds small pieces of material tightly and giving unrestricted access to the item to allow you to shape it to your hearts desire, unlike most other vices. In addition, its a well constructed, robust piece of kit which should last a lifetime of use. Well worth the money, you will not be disappointed.

Perfect Vise For Nuts and Saddles!

Holds firmly, and most important, The extended jaws let it get out of the way for filing angled nut slots or shaping compensated saddles. A pleasure to use and it's priced so it's easier to buy it than to engineer it yourself.

Worth the Scratch

I got this vise to assist in making a new bone nut for my Les Paul. It is flat on the sides & front, so you can rotate the clamped piece on your bench to work all exposed sides. Worked quite well.

Great vise

I really like this vise
It is heavy enough that i dont have to clamp it down etc- i just put the nut/saddle in and shape. It is not so heavy that i cant twirl it around on my bench when i need a new angle.

Good product and worth the price if you're a luthier or do repairs.

good all round vise

Seriously, besides a guitar neck how many things do you put in your bench vise. Bridge saddles, nuts, frets, bridge pins all need a small vise. I've never had to clamp it. my bench is covered in that extruded foam shelf liner from rubbermaid. and it never slips. I also use it to hold my fret bender, so I don't have to keep it sticking up in the way, bolted to the bench.

The Tool for the Job

By

I hesitated on buying this vise based upon a few previous reviews, but I'm delighted with it. It's heavy, solid (not at all toy-like), and the jaws are just right for the purpose. I had futzed around using my regular vise- cutting little wood inserts that I had to juggle in place with my third hand while trying to tighten down on the nut. Not any more! Worked like a charm- lots of room to angle files in order to get just where you need to. I'd rather not have it in the way when not needed bolted to my bench- held in my big vise it's there only when I need it and up higher where it's easier to use. Easily worth it.
