Nut and Saddle Vise

About This Item

A better way to hold nuts and saddles for easier, faster shaping.

Sure, most of us already have a shop vise. And for a long time, you've probably used yours to hold nuts and saddles for filing and shaping. But you've also noticed that your vise jaws get in the way when you're trying to file the top of that nut or saddle, so you're constantly repositioning the work in the jaws.

We considered the problem and designed a special vise that gives you the clearance you need for an easier and more efficient job.

The custom jaws are extra tall, with steep angles for easier access to your work. The end of the vise is beveled for extra relief, too. The 2"-wide steel jaws are hardened for durability and specially undercut to stay parallel under pressure, holding the nut or saddle uniformly without slippage.

For other jobs, the jaws open to 2-7/16", making it versatile for gripping all kinds of small work. This is a well-made, heavy little portable steel vise with a 2" x 5-5/8" footprint; you can clamp it to the edge of your workbench, or into your larger shop vise.

The Nut and Saddle Vise is included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Update to Previous Review, Nut/Saddle Vise

Since I've had a chance to work with this vise a little longer, I thought I'd post an update. The only issue I've had is the handle hitting the work bench when tightening and loosening. A visit to the local metal supply, and a bit of work, solved that problem. I created a mounting plate and a set of blocks to elevate the vise off the bench. Now the handle clears the bench with no problem. Working on some of my wife's broken jewelry is so much easier now! Thanks again, StewMac!

Nut and Saddle Vise

Great little vise. I’ve been using my drill press vise for years, with good results as longin as your layout job is accurate. Granted, the jaw design on this vise is a small thing but boy does it make the job easier and more accurate! I added some rubber padding to the base, just to help protect whatever surface I’m working on, and lubed the screw but that’s it. I am one happy camper!

Very good quality vise. Nice weight to it. The beveled jaw plates are great. Very pleased.

I've been looking for this vise for a long time!

Like many others, my Panavise has been limping along, trying to do a variety of jobs in electronics, woodworking, metalworking, plastics, just not doing them very well. I don't know how many time I've made jaw pads to hold a small piece of something, then struggled to get all three pieces aligned while closing the vise. Well, no more!
The first thing I did was disassemble the vise for a good cleanup. While the pieces are a bit rough, some work with a file and India stone cleaned up the rough edges. After a good coating of 10W compressor oil, I set about finding some work to put the vise through it paces.
So far, some electronics and small metal pieces have been clamped into the vise, and the work was much easier. The raised jaws and the beveled edges provided much clearance for filing, soldering, and Dremel tool work.
I'll assume that it's marvelous for nuts and saddles, I haven't done any of that type of work. What I have used it for, it's been so much better than a standard vise. I've wanted one of these for years. I'm glad I have one now! Thanks, Stewart MacDonald!

I finally got one and I wish I had gotten one a lot sooner. Works best when held in a bench vise, but can also be hand held on a flat surface.

Great all around little vice

Nice little vice that can be clamped into larger bench vice to work on nuts, saddles and any other small object that the bench vice is too big for keeping your work at the correct level

Handy tool for small work....

Very well made tool, heavier than I expected. The beveled jaws are a great plus over other similar vises. Very useful for many types of work besides fabricating nuts and saddles.

Way better than what I've been using

Casting and machining are a bit rough. Fully functional, though. Perfect for shaping nuts.

I haven’t even used this yet. It will be head an shoulders above the vise I use. I’m looking forward to my next nut and saddle work. Maybe I can finally them right.
